Detroit Mayor Dave Bing, the 69-year-old former NBA star and Hall of Famer, says he will not seek another term in office. Instead, he will explore a bid for Wayne County executive.
His decision not to seek re-election is not a huge surprise, given that the struggling city is currently being run by a state-appointed emergency financial manager who is considering a municipal bankruptcy. The announcement leaves former Detroit Medical Center chief Mike Duggan and Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon as the two frontrunners for the four-year term. Five other candidates are in the running. The top two vote-getters on Aug. 5 advance to the Nov. 6 general election.
Bing was elected mayor in May 2009 to complete the remaining months of disgraced ex-mayor Kwame Kilpatricks second term. Voters re-elected him to a full term that November. Bing had bold ideas for fixing the city, but proved to be ineffective as mayor, often clashing with city unions and the City Council.
Bing was featured in a Forbes cover story, City of Hope, in June 2011, and talked candidly about the citys troubles. Right now its all about survival, he said at the time. I believe this city has a futureotherwise I wouldnt be doing what Im doing, because its a thankless job.

A decent fellow in an impossible situation.
The only guy I can think of who could possible save the situation is Joe Arpaio and I doubt he wants the sh!tty winters up there.
Contrary to popular belief, there are far more muslims in NY, NJ, CA, and other states.
The largest single Arab population in the Detroit area are Chaldean Christians.
Don’t worry, nobody expects you to do a damn thing.
Some Freepers react like Pavlov's Dog when they see the chance to rip on someone else's state or city.
Doesn’t matter...between the dark side, and Muslim side ..and the wreck Detroit is...only third world “beings” would care to make a home there. It sure isn’t a place to raise a family...I wouldn’t put my kids in that environment...ever!
In support of Bing, nobody but nobody with an ounce of integrity and honesty would have been effective given the current conditions created by Kilpatrick.
I'd like to see him run for county Executive and beat out that shyster crook Robert Ficano...........
Why worry?....It’s going down and there’s nothing that is going to stop it from being bankrupt...Detroit is ‘broke’ in all ways.
Right after becoming mayor he addressed the city council and asked them how the hell are they getting rich as the city collapses around them.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see FBI raids of various city council members homes before its all over. Rick Snyder has been kind of sneaky like that.
Exactly right....to make that happen would cause great outcry from the residents there...heck they had kissy fits for being told they had to move from condemned buildings!
Bing is the first Mayor since probably Roman Gribbs 40 years ago who didn’t loot the city. That he’s voluntarily leaving after roughly just one term demonstrates that.
Bing’s salary was $1.00.
He’s not a bad guy.
You’re confusing Detroit for Dearborn.
That teat (Detroit) is dry ... stripped of the last drop
TT
Put Snyder on it. He's a sneaky little $hit. (with apologies to Dean Wormer & Douglas Niedermeyer)
Did you see the Dallas based company that is making high end wristwatches in Detroit? A Minnesota based company is making wide flat screen TVs in Detroit now. (The only TVs made in the USA) JP Morgan just opened a regional HQ in Detroit. A Canadian company has reopened the salt mine under the city and they’re paying for the new bridge over the Detroit river which will eventually bring hundreds of warehousing and freight related jobs.

Lots of real estate dealing going on now for that valuable riverfront property. There was even a serious billion dollar offer for Belle Isle a while back. Canadian companies wouldn’t be dumping all the money into Detroit if they didn’t see a brighter future.
Call me when MI votes for a Republican.
I’ll buy that and Lake Erie it is then.
Buy low... It’s cheap so there’s not much risk to purchase.
