Gallup: Same-Sex Marriage Support Solidifies Above 50% in U.S.

Fifty-three percent of Americans say the law should recognize same-sex marriages, the third consecutive reading of 50% or above in Gallup polling over the past year. The 53% in favor ties the high to this point, also measured last November and in May 2011.

Gallup's May 2-7 poll suggests Americans' support for gay marriage is solidifying above the majority level. Recently, Rhode Island and Delaware legalized same-sex marriage, and Minnesota is likely to follow suit. That would bring the total number of states legally recognizing same-sex marriage to 12.

Just three years ago, support for gay marriage was 44%. The current 53% level of support is essentially double the 27% in Gallup's initial measurement on gay marriage, in 1996.

Nearly all U.S. subgroups are more likely to favor gay marriage now than in the past. Politically, Democrats, independents, and liberals all show increasing support for gay marriage over time, with each well above the majority level now. Republicans, conservatives, and moderates are more likely to favor gay marriage now than in 1996, but the increase in support among these groups may have stalled. Thus, most of the increase in the percentage favoring legal gay marriage in the last three years has come among left-leaning groups politically.

There has been a cascade preference toward recognizing same sex marriage for the time being. That preference was fueled by society shifting from picking on homosexuals to feeling sorry for homosexuals to recognizing homosexuals as victims of being picked on to having a core of homosexual activists who are seeking vengeance for being picked on in the past on the institutions that they feel were at the root of their maltreatment.

No where in this, are kids any real issue. Although some effort is made to reassure everyone that they will be fine as traditional marriage is redefined...the past speaks for itself. Marriage has already deteriorated in other ways, and they have not been fine.

Some do, for sure. Short of appointing you emperor, I would suggest the GOP and others simply learn how to process their bullsh-t findings.....:)

It was on the ballot in 2012. Opponents of same-sex marriage proposed a constitutional amendment that would have barred the legislature from recognizing same-sex marriage. It lost, 47%-53%.

Sure it is. We’re talking California, supposedly far-left and liberal. Resounding means a complete and sure majority, which 52 percent is, and it was comprised of all voting groups, not just Republicans. Democrats in the coastal cities outnumber conservatives, so many of them voted for the proposition.

A national opinion poll is useless on this issue. If anyone wants to really know if the outlook on this is positive or negative they should just look at a list of all the states that have addressed the issue by popular voting, how liberal they are, what states have passed amendments around them, when they passed them and by how much. You know, actual votes as opposed to what one stranger says to another over the phone about what they think about ‘gay marriage.’

The ranges are spread between Minnesota’s 47% against their amendment in 2012 to Mississippi’s 86% for in 2004, as far as I can figure. There are states that would probably repeal their amendments right now by popular vote, and others that would seem to be a long way away from that. There are states that still don’t have an amendment or ‘gay marriage’ that would pass an amnendment easily right now and others that would might simply enact ‘gay marriage’ by popular vote. In general, I don’t think the picture is very rosy at all.

Especially when you consider that Prop. 22 passed by 61% in 2000 and Prop. 8 only passed by 52% in 2008, that’s losing 9% in 8 years. NC voted in theirs by 61% last year, basically tying the CA of 12 years before, something that would have made folks call you nuts if you would have told them that in 2000. All the states around NC passed their amendments by 75%+ except VA (57% in 2006) at least 6 years ago.

Not completely correct. Back in 1994 the largest demographic cohort was just entering kindergarten (from the Ger: child garden - where the state grows children).

What we’re watching is that demographic’s brainwashing coming to fruition.

Here's where I'm optimistic:

We've simply failed in explaining how homosexuality will make society worse. For that we need clarity on whether homosexuality is a mental illness, what makes a family strong i.e. a mother and father committed to one another and their children, and a disease vector showing just how unhealthy the homosexual lifestyle is e.g. suicides, drug/alcohol addiction/abuse, physical and mental abuse, disease, disease transmission and etc.

I suspect that support is thin and shallow, based on an abuse of the libertarian line "it's all OK for adults to do as they wish, as long as you're not hurting someone else". Plus, we've been shown the idealized homosexual, not the real ones. Show the hurt and pull back the curtain on the homosexual lifestyle the same way as has been done with abortion.

If people recognized just how self-abusive the lifestyle is they would reverse back just as quickly. Where are the conservatives showing just how few homosexuals really ever "marry" despite it being legalized in many states. In IL they don't even use the civil unions laws. This is an unnecessary change.
