Narcissists are known to "get emotional" when the cloak comes off.They will do anything to avoid exposure. My first thought was he's faking it for the Oprah low brain function crowd.
My second thought was that it was more of a sociopath/narcissist crying response that a "real" emotional response that healthy people might have.
