HUNTSVILLE, Ala., May 6 (UPI) -- The U.S. Army has given the first development contracts for renewable energy technologies under a $7 billion initiative.
Five companies were awarded indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity awards in geothermal technologies.
The U.S. companies are: Constellation NewEnergy Inc., ECC Renewables LLC, Enel Green Power North America Inc., LTC Federal LLC and Siemens Government Technologies Inc.
The multiple award task orders were issued by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Engineering and Support Center, Huntsville, Ala., working with the Army Energy Initiatives Task Force.
"Announcement of awards for the remaining technologies -- solar, wind and biomass -- are anticipated for staggered release through the end of calendar year 2013," the Army said.
The multiple award task orders are for three years with seven one-year options. The awards will be used to procure reliable, locally generated, renewable and alternative energy through power purchase agreements for military installations.
The $7 billion capacity would be expended for power purchase agreements to procure energy over a period of 30 years or less from renewable energy plants that are designed, financed, constructed, operated and maintained by contractors using private sector financing.

The fags are kickin’ @$$ in the Pentagon. The Pentagon belongs to them now!
They have lost their way. Once the adults return to power, if we should be so blessed, the army needs to clean house.
Awesome! Just what we need! Expensive, unreliable sources of energy.
Army energy saving/green.
Obama Generals have had their money cut drastically so they decide to piss it away on Green Energy.
I guess that makes sense to someone.
They could cut back on the amount of charge in the ammo (rifle, tanks, bombers, etc.) to surely reduce their carbon footprint.
Exactly. Now that the “climate change” hoax and scam has been exposed, Barry has to do something for his environmentalist loon donors to keep them happy. They were all planning on getting big time rich with their “climate change” scam. Barry has to throw them a bone to cheer them up. They’re going to love being able to raid the Pentagon’s budget. Hippies hate the Pentagon.
This makes me sick. Next thing we’ll see is multi-billion dollar green weapons. It bad enough that we smart weapons out of fear of collateral damage. I say the only good Muslim is a dead Muslim and we should dispatch as many as possible as cheaply as possible.
Good for us if they install martial law.
BTW, It’s occurs to me that a couple dozen well-placed nukes on 9/12/2001 could have saved us enormous amounts of energy.
The Army does need to operational, whether surrounding traditional infrastructure is or not. I’m confined to using PV solar and other solar energy here (too far from powerlines and natural gas) and see it as a hardship (initial costs). But I also see the advantages for all of us in off-grid energy for the Army (having also been a combat engineer, combat type, not construction).
To all: what will you do for energy, if infrastructure is torn up by disaster? It would be interesting to see populations of large suburbs around major cities burning wood or coal to stay warm enough (not referring to people in the extremely populated south here, where air conditioning is used to keep violent crime down).
If the technology is more efficient/reliable/cheaper, then I say "Use it." Why wouldn't we?
But since that question is not discussed in the article, I can already guess the answer.
