The Utilities are only interested in getting paid for the electricity they deliver. As far as I know, they're having no trouble with that.

Not true. From a utility standpoint, these meters are PERFECT as it negates the need for energy storage when systems get too top-heavy with wind and solar (i.e., unpredictable generation)...and they are being forced into that.
Without thees meters, the Utilities would have to build a boatload of new plants, to deal with cloudy/windless days, or roll blackouts - neither of which is very popular.
...but shut off demand when supply dries up...much easier for them, politically.
...but don’t get me wrong - others (law enforcement, bad guys, employers who want to know if their employee is really home sick, etc.) are very interested in that information, but they are not the ones that NEED the smart meters.
