CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Long-missing Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus have been found alive, a police source confirms.
WOIO Channel 19 had reported that a woman claiming to be Berry called police Monday afternoon and told a dispatcher that she was in a house on Seymour Avenue on the city's West Side. The woman said DeJesus was with her.
"We've confirmed it's them," a detective said. "They are alive and safe."
Berry, now 27, and DeJesus, 23, were taken to MetroHealth Medical Center. The FBI and police will interview the women when they are discharged, the detective said.
Police arrested the owner of the house, Ariel Castro, 52, who had lived in the house since 1992. Records show he was arrested for domestic violence in 1993, but a grand jury declined to indict him.
Neighbors on Seymour said a man was arrested and three women came out of the home.
Berry disappeared at about 7:40 p.m. April 21, 2003, a day before her 17th birthday. She was last seen leaving her job at a Burger King at West 110th Street and Lorain Avenue.
DeJesus, then 14, vanished April 2, 2004, while walking home from school in the same area. Since then, the two have been the subject of numerous vigils.
Outside of MetroHealth tonight, a growing crowd awaits word on the women's condition.
Berrys cousin, Tasheena Mitchell, 26, who was 16 years old when Berry disappeared, said her brother had called to tell her the news that Berry is alive. But she said she received it skeptically, having had her hopes dashed by false reports in the past.
She was my best friend, Mitchell said.
A friend interrupted her, Shes alive. She is your best friend.
Youre right, Mitchell continued. She is my best friend. Im so nervous. Im so excited. They wont let me inside. But I will stay here all night if I have to.
Were they or their parents born in another country? If so did they come here legally?
At least five babies were born at the home owned by Ariel Castro, (left) while one of the victims suffered as many as three miscarriages because she was so malnourished, police sources told NewsChannel5.
"Family values don't stop at the Rio Grande".
The crime wave that has been flowing over our borders is going to shock the American conscious! Kidnapping for ransom and the corrupting of our law enforcement, politicians, and judges will be in epidemic proportions.
Third world culture tends to have a higher tolerance of criminal activity. Take a ride into Nuevo Loredo!
And the PD is going to 3 day/week home delivery but available on the news stands every day..
Get the nooses ready.
Actually let’s draw and quarter them, grind them into a slurry with pigs and use to slurry drown and entomb Dzokar the terrorist boy.
I know, I’m stopping for Irma time.
