CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Long-missing Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus have been found alive, a police source confirms.
WOIO Channel 19 had reported that a woman claiming to be Berry called police Monday afternoon and told a dispatcher that she was in a house on Seymour Avenue on the city's West Side. The woman said DeJesus was with her.
"We've confirmed it's them," a detective said. "They are alive and safe."
Berry, now 27, and DeJesus, 23, were taken to MetroHealth Medical Center. The FBI and police will interview the women when they are discharged, the detective said.
Police arrested the owner of the house, Ariel Castro, 52, who had lived in the house since 1992. Records show he was arrested for domestic violence in 1993, but a grand jury declined to indict him.
Neighbors on Seymour said a man was arrested and three women came out of the home.
Berry disappeared at about 7:40 p.m. April 21, 2003, a day before her 17th birthday. She was last seen leaving her job at a Burger King at West 110th Street and Lorain Avenue.
DeJesus, then 14, vanished April 2, 2004, while walking home from school in the same area. Since then, the two have been the subject of numerous vigils.
Outside of MetroHealth tonight, a growing crowd awaits word on the women's condition.
Berrys cousin, Tasheena Mitchell, 26, who was 16 years old when Berry disappeared, said her brother had called to tell her the news that Berry is alive. But she said she received it skeptically, having had her hopes dashed by false reports in the past.
She was my best friend, Mitchell said.
A friend interrupted her, Shes alive. She is your best friend.
Youre right, Mitchell continued. She is my best friend. Im so nervous. Im so excited. They wont let me inside. But I will stay here all night if I have to.

I am hearing that the Castro brothers are Hispanic.
I am so frigging sick of hearing about this, we have far more important issues going on and yet this is being covered by all media outlets.
Now the guy which helped her open the door is a HERO!!!!!!!!.
Every time in these cases they have to try and find a so called hero, he;s not a hero, he;s a neighbor who happened to be there and there was no risk to himself.
A hero is a person who runs in front of rounds being fired, to save others.
Still it got Libya off the news and now we’ll be subjected to this non story for days.
all the media outlets are covering this, fine, they fund them, they are now free but hardly massive news to the country, .
it affects how many in this country compared to , oh debt, sending, taxes, Libya, a lying lazy Admin.
How nice for the media to now use this to not cover the hearings on Benghazi and now FOX and CNN are saying the guy who was there is a hero.
They and I must have very different reasons why some are hero’s’.
This is a feel good story but hardly national news for the day
The perp is a school bus driver? Hmmmmm.
I disagree with you on his being a hero. He isn’t a hero of the sort of our soldiers serving in harms way, but he did put himself at risk by breaking down the door to get her out. If the guy would have returned, if the door had been booby trapped... he went well above and beyond. He could have simply called police and let it go from there, but he went to her and helped her get out.
A friend of mine in Tennessee used to complain constantly about having to 'shoo' ADULT Hispanic males away from her young teen-age daughters...part of their 'culture'?
I'm doubting Amanda gave birth alone. Someone likely helped. There's going to be more info coming for weeks (all helping the MSM to cover Obama on Benghazi, too).
I think if anyone had heard a woman shouting from a house they have had barbecues at, know the guy for years then anyone would have gone over and helped the girl out.
The word hero has been watered down to suit every incident today by a media looking for angles to get more viewers in order to get the sheep repeating their mantra.
This is such a non story where the media will play every angle , go over the top and use it to get the sheep talking at their water coolers today while the real news is not being covered.
this story affects the country how?
Far more pressing issues at hand right now, fine they are free, he has been arrested why keep covering it, move on
Apparently chained up daily in the locked basement... but for the past 6 years, I'm sure that keeping Amanda's baby was another good avenue of control over her. And, after 13 years, basically half of her life, she was probably "accustomed" to the routine. She may have let other opportunities slip by without knowing it.
OH it seems is becoming the CA of the Midwest and as I;m down south I’d like to know just how many people still live in that state because it seems from all the plates here in the south that many in OH are moving out.
OH state where the sheep clapped and cheered the bozo this weekend.
Still at least the white house is happy as Benghazi is off the news again and how nice of the media to opine
I understand, our media manipulates us, no doubt. But, given the community, I still will give him credit for going over.
I am fascinated by how quickly the media was able to identify him, get his neighbors, his relatives, their relatives on interviews. But, when the Boston bombing suspects were shaping up to be Muslim motivated terrorists, how quickly those outreaches shriveled up.
And, yes, we do face more important issues. No doubt. We can’t drop our focus.
But, please, don’t discount what it was for this guy to go over and help in that community. It isn’t my community where I know my neighbors would help take care of me. These are rough places.
A former coworker of mine had to move because hispanic men congregated in front of the Home Depot across the street made sexual advances on her 12-y.o. daughter every day while she waited for the bus. They would even do it while her mom was present.
How many welfare rolls was the alleged perp on?
