UKIP success in council elections ("Biggest Protest Vote in British History")

UKIP chief Nigel Farage’s “clowns” were today ready to enjoy the last laugh after the biggest protest vote in British history.

A wave of support in yesterday’s council elections put the anti-EU party on course to take up to a THIRD of all votes in some battlegrounds.

An early indication of their strength came last night in the South Shields Parliamentary by-election. Labour held the seat — but UKIP came second with 5,988 votes.

Their slice of the vote in the local elections, meanwhile, looked set to top 20 per cent.

That would smash the previous best for a party outside Westminster’s big three — UKIP’s 16.5 per cent in the 2009 Euro elections.

Early council results suggested UKIP were on course to win over 100 seats.

It follows a week in which the party were branded “clowns”, “fruitcakes”, and “loonies” by a raft of senior Tories. The onslaught looks only to have boosted the party’s popularity among disenchanted voters.

A potential 18 million went to the polls to elect 2,300 councillors across 35 local authorities in England and Wales.

PM David Cameron’s Tories expect a heavy drubbing, losing as many as 600 of their 1,485 seats — many in their traditional heartlands.

A senior source admitted: “We’re fighting from an all-time high in 2009 so it was always going to be hard.”

The Lib Dems fear coming a humiliating fourth, losing 130 of their 493 seats.

The British "Tea Party" won big in local elections. This is some of the best news in a long time coming out of Britain. Cameron's push of gay marriage and reluctance to put EU membership to a vote and loose stance on unfettered immigration has hurt him hugely and after this the number of people leaving the Tories for Ukip is likely to accelerate.

With UKIP doing so well, perhaps the UK can be saved from itself. Certainly the policies of the Tories and Labour won't.

Its good to see this. I think we are in for some surprises in France and also Australia. People appear to be waking up and a lot of people including the young have soured on the “mainstream” parties.

Interesting. I wonder how analogous a situation it could be to here in the US, with the GOP caving all over the place on similar issues. Watching Rubio push amnesty, Paul Ryan now endorsing gay adoption, Toomey into gun registration, etc., all I can add is that the GOP obviously no longer reflects my values nor my ideology. Not one damn bit. We need a new UKIP-like option here!

Its difficult here but I believe it is possible and in 2016 I believe if the GOP continues to ignore the 60-70% of the party which is its conservative base while running not with conservative issues and issues that most Republicans want addressed but instead taking up Progressive Democrat issues they are going to face a rift. A true majority conservative center right party could be constructed by combining the GOP base with the remaining segment of working class conservative Democrats and conservative leaning independents. 2010 proved that there is potential for such a party to be built as did Reagan before but every time the GOP wins with that model it then retreats and pretends that it can’t win unless it embraces a more moderate tone and then of course it has lost two Presidential runs based on that unwise assumption.

I still have hope for the GOP but it is growing dimmer and if they foist another Romney on us I’m done with them. We deserve to be respected. The GOP is a majority conservative party and its leadership needs to start acting like it.

Well I think that, in a very real sense, that Nigel Farage is right in saying that the UKIP is a “British Tea Party”. The UKIP is opposed to the loss of British independence and freedom and is fighting the oppression of the Statists and the EU collectivists.

I would be very proud to see some UKIP supporters flying the Gadsden flag along with their Union Jack—it would be a quite fitting sight. Seeing the sudden rise of the UKIP in these local elections is encouraging.

UKIP made a major break through tonight. They have made consistent gains from 14% to now what is 26% in council elections which makes them very much a contender. They actually have proven they can not just win votes but take a significant number of seats.

BTW This particular seat is in a Labour stronghold. UKIP performed better against Labour than the Tories which was the point of South Shields mention. Also the Lib Dems were totally nuked. The point being that UKIP is a growing threat not just to Tories.

I agree, I’ve been watching UKIP for a while and they have all the qualities of the Tea Party. I think they are going to force the Tories from top 2 status and put the hurt to labour and the lid dems may not survive as Ukip rises in the future. Tonight was just a breakthrough. It will be interesting come the next general election. It is likely UKIP support could explode. Viability has a way of making people take you seriously and in the parliamentary system there is not nearly the stigma of third party vote splitting. Personally I’d almost like to see all federal elections to go to a run off style system which would break the stranglehold of major parties.
