Tennis great Jimmy Connors hints his former fiancée, Americas on-court sweetheart Chris Evert, got pregnant and then had an abortion as they became the biggest stars and the most popular couple in the sport.
The bad boy of tennis reveals in his new memoir, The Outsider, that just weeks before their planned wedding in 1974, An issue had arisen as a result of youthful passion, and a decision had to be made as a couple, Connors writes.
Chrissie called to say she was coming out to LA to take care of the issue. I was perfectly happy to let nature take its course and accept responsibility for what was to come
While Connors was 22 at the time, Evert was 19, and raised in a Catholic home. He wrote, Chrissie, however, had already made up her mind that the timing was bad and too much was riding on her future. She asked me to handle the details.
He said he responded, Well, thanks for letting me know. Since I dont have any say in the matter, then I guess I am just here to help.
The situation directly led to the end of their relationship, he continues, and he found himself thinking he wasnt ready to be married. It was a horrible feeling, but I knew it was over. Getting married wasnt going to be good for either of us.
Connors recounts how he told her they were still young and should take a step back. He said she responded coldly, OK, if thats what you think. Ive got a match tomorrow. Not a problem.
He concluded that despite the fact they had battled to stay together, the problem was they were both rising stars Can two No. 1s exist in the same family?

As I remember, this was about the same time that Billie Jean King published news of her abortion — also because the timing was “not right”.
I’m appalled by all of them. The real #1s are the moms who lovingly raise their own kids — no matter what the timing.
Agreed. Keep your private life to yourself.
Yeah two narcissists don't usually last long. I am sure both of their old spouses were in retrospect relieved they threw them over for each other. 'Sweet ole' Chrissy' isn't so sweet any more and sounds like she never was very principled either. I knew she was a cad with the Norman situation but the abortion just tells me there is only 1 number one in Chrissy's life.
Evert and Norman are over.
As far as I am concerned the same applies to sexual preference. Not for public consumption as far as I am concerned.
Connors still the self-centered brat. Never liked him.
One less of him in the world isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
This a very common result of abortion--the death of a relationship as well as a baby.
exactly right,
The Norman marriage lasted 18 months and the divorce was final on Dec. 8, 2009. That was her 3rd marriage.
I’ll never forget Connors wiping the floor with Navratilova. The press maintained strict silence about the match, though they never ceased talking about Bobby Riggs losing to Billie Jean King.
Somehow the fact that he had to identify her as Christian, will be used by the pro-murders to somehow suggest enlightened Christians agree with them. Or some such nonsense, they come up with the most upside down thinking so I’m just guessing here.
Connors, ego much?
This isn't just about Connors and Evert, it is also about their child. Connors owes more respect to that child than to the woman who had him or her killed.
By keeping quiet, Connors protected Evert for all these years. I'm not at all sure she deserved it.
