What Should We Do about Guns?
nationalreview.com ^ | 1 May, 2013 | John Lott

Posted on 05/01/2013 8:17:49 PM PDT by marktwain

After the defeat of the Manchin-Toomey background-check bill, and the subsequent demonization of the Senate, Senators Manchin and Toomey are reportedly back at work on bipartisan legislation addressing gun control. John R. Lott, author of the new book At the Brink, who has been researching gun policy for decades, talks about the state of the debate with National Review Online’s Kathryn Jean Lopez.

Kathryn Jean Lopez: Gabby Giffords has accused the Senate of being in the grips of the gun lobby. Is there another explanation for the defeat of the Manchin-Toomey bill?

JOHN R. LOTT: Yes, there is. The politicians were simply representing the voters in their districts.

The accusation that politicians were attempting to please the gun lobby at the expense of their constituents, which is based on the oft-repeated assertion that 80 to 90 percent of the public say they favor background checks, is simply not credible. The survey questions on which this statistic is based proved nothing more than that respondents wished to disarm criminals. The questions posed were about a hypothetical, idealized system of background checks, not about the actual legislation facing Congress.

A better survey was recently released by the Pew Research Center. It asked: “What word best describes how you feel about the Senate voting down new gun control legislation that included background checks on gun purchases?” Many voters were upset that the bill didn’t pass, but a very substantial group were relieved. Overall, 47 percent were disappointed and 39 percent were relieved. Not surprisingly, opinions varied drastically across political affiliation. Among Republicans, 51 percent were relieved and 34 percent were disappointed. Among independents, the split was 48 percent relieved and 41 disappointed. In sharp contrast, only 22 percent of Democrats were relieved, while 67 percent were disappointed.

Oh no. I was a freshman in Cardinal Hayes High School, the Bronx, in November 1965. I got to the 7th Cav at the tail end in the spring of 72.

Thanks. Great billboard referenced in one of those links, and the story is a hoot. Most Indians aren’t sensitive or squishy enough to dislike that billboard. Being so sensitive is for upscale folks. ;-)

What should we do?

Pass the "National 2nd amendment enforcement act" mandating constitutional carry in all states and jurisdictions including NY whether little Mickey Bloomberg likes it not.

I wish there was a way we could get liberals to advocate the repeal of 2nd amendment, if only judges would actually enforce it.

Oh and if we don’t like what happened in CT we should lock up violent scitzos BEFORE they hurt people.

Homicidal lunatics being allowed to roam around is the real and ignored issue with CT.

The left is concerned with what tool the perp used rather than the perp.

Finding they can run roughshod over the American people (a statistically representative plebiscite of all Americans eligible to vote, weighted as normal by electoral college representation, would have comfortably concurred on Romney last November), the Democrat arrogance and their faith in their ability to rabble rouse grows without bound.

If I fault the GOP it is for their failure to scream shame, shame, shame when Democrats do this. Can you imagine what Democrats would scream if, say, GWB had nosed into state legislative elections. They have anointed Barack Obama emperor of the US, or at least tried to (an anointing from hell).

Read this article yesterday on NR’s website; great read, lots of good sense, especially about doing away with the murderous “gun-free” zones.

Of the nut case rampaging perpetrators of mass shootings to date, all gave off signs of being nuttier and more deluded than fruit cakes; these were not mere eccentrics or odd balls.

Seems that almost no matter how bad these cases get, unless maybe they are stabbing themselves with knives, the ACLU has intimidated doctors into being satisfied with a pill and a promise.

Yes it is a long article and full of facts and logic that show gun control is worthless as a crime preventive measure. However,anti-gunners don't use logic. They cannot be reasoned with because their visceral hatred of guns and gun owners isn't based on logic. It is an outgrowth of their love of government. Anything that challenges the absolute power of government in their minds is blasphemy, not something that is susceptible to reasoned discussion.

They cannot be bargained with. First, they can never be trusted. They say give is this and we won't take that, but immediately after they take one thing they're after the next. Secondly and more fundamentally, THEY HAVE NOTHING WITH WHICH TO BARGAIN. Their "bargains' are all of the form we'll take something form you now and more from you later. All they want is to take our rights. What can they give in return? Slavery. Some bargain.

They feel no remorse. On the contrary, every time they take something from us they feel leation and are energized to take more.

They feel no fear. Why, because they have nothing to lose. If they don't pass restrictive laws, then what are the consequences to them? NOTHING. Lest anyone think that their voting records make them vulnerable to losing an election, consider where the most virulent an pernicious anti-gunners come from - places like New york, MA, NJ, MD, CT, etc. The majority of the voters in those state WANT gun control and what's more they want to cram it up the a$$e$ of the rest of the country.

They feel no pity. Kids killed because of their gun free zone laws? They feel JOY not pity because then the emotion of the foolish masses can be manipulated into supporting more of the stupid laws that contributed to the problem in the first place.

AND THEY NEVER QUIT, EVER. There are only three possible final outcomes.

  1. They get their wish and we become a "country where only the police and military are armed."
  2. Those of us who resist are killed by their mindless jackbooted thugs who will be "just following orders."
  3. we kill enough of them and their sturmabteilungsman to be safe for a while.
But safety never lasts. Look at MA. The majority of massholes hate and fear guns and worship government. 237 years ago the citizens there were just exactly the opposite.

Fantastic post. You have completely captured the socialists actions, thought processes, and motives. This can be applied to more than the 2nd amendment. This how they act with all of their chosen issues.

In terms of the outcomes I suspect that there are more options but those are the most likely.
