Man loses life savings on carnival game (New Hampshire)

A New Hampshire man who thought he had a decent ball toss says he lost his life savings—or about $2,600—playing a carnival game he claims was rigged.

Henry Gribbohm told WBZ-TV that he was attempting to win an Xbox Kinect at the Manchester carnival when things went awry.

The 30-year-old from Epsom, N.H., was playing a game called Tubs of Fun in which contestants toss balls into a tub, but the balls kept popping out.

“It’s not possible that it wasn’t rigged,” Gribbohm said. “You just get caught up in the whole ‘I’ve got to win my money back.’”

If it were real, you could feed your family for a week or so ...

‘Occupy’ carnival!

Nah, an Occu-patsy wouldn't have had $2600 - - and would already have the X-box.

I spent 20 bucks when I was a teen trying to win the hot chick date a teddy bear at the county fair.
I noticed he would reach behind the cats you had to knock down on every other cat when new game began! toss was .50 last toss I had only .50 left! we would just slide the coins back and forth till I needed change. Last toss I slid coins back to me and he didn’t notice. So that gave me one more!
At that point I saw one of my LEO friends and pointed him out and said this game is rigged, do you want to talk to Barney?
He said here’s your bear please leave!

30 year old man... Xbox... life savings of $2600...carnival game...

(do we see any type of pattern emerging from this data??)

Typical O’bummer supporter. I’m surprised he didnt demand that he win a prize every time he played or he’d get an attorney. Too bad the world is going to have to go to complete hell because of these self-entitled clueless Satan loving scumbags so they can finally get a clue that they’re not as “special” as Mommy told them they were.

I have often wondered why sheriff’s allow those carnival games. They are clearly engaged in illegal activity.

I recall when I was in college one of my friends lost every cent he had on him at the one where you toss the ball at a bulls eye hoping the ball falls into a hole in the bottom of the basket.

He would hit two in a row but always miss with the 3rd one. Despite my standing there telling him it was rigged, he kept on trying win back what he had lost.

Yes, that’s a red flag for sure.

Another red flag... guy spends $2600 to win an XBox that has a retail price of $300-400.

Another red flag... guy loses $2600 before realizing the game is rigged.

Looks like we’ve got a genuwine genius on our hands.

Obama voter.

I once paid $0.25 once to see a stuffed Big Foot at the state fair. It was worth every penny.

carnival game difficulty is directly proportional to the value of the prize, even when it's not rigged...

That’s called gambling, Henry. The same thing happens to people who are “just trying to get their money back” in Atlantic City and Las Vegas.

Between this and a couple of other articles on this topic, it seems like after a while, he wasn't playing for the Xbox - he was playing straight up for cash. This article quotes him as saying "You just get caught up in the whole ‘I’ve got to win my money back,’” and a couple of others quote him as saying that he was playing double-or-nothing (which would explain how the amount reached $2,600).

If that's the case, I wouldn't be surprised if the NH gaming board (or State AG) got involved - according to a quick search, it looks like a business in NH that conducts gambling activities is guilty of a Class B Felony if it has "gross revenue of $2,000 in any single day."

Difference being, it's legal in Atlantic City and Las Vegas. Not so much in New Hampshire. Won't get this idiot his money back (after all, he was gambling too), but may get the carnival in a heap of trouble.

At 6 or 8 or so I Begged my Dad for $1.00 in Ocean City MD for a “Grab Bag.” Begged and begged. (a bag with a surprise in it.) He finally relented.

Inside, some broken crayons and a doll’s make-up kit. No returns.

Sadness. Feeling I had let him down, and myself. I was totally inconsolable.

I NEVER forgot that day and thank God for those tears, that lesson, and my Dad, bless his soul in Heaven!
