As for “waking up,” I don’t think that’s ever going to happen. Don’t forget, Kerry said that people in the US will just have to get used to losing a few of us every now and again to terrorism - it’s the new normal, don’t you know - and even that didn’t seem to disturb many people outside of here.

What’s going to happen is not at all what Kerry described - a few people dying here or there. By the time this is done Arab Spring will have come to America and Barbara Streisand will be wearing a burqua. That’s what Obama was installed to do, and he’s one EMP away from getting it done. And some reports suggest Iran or North Korea could hit us with that any time they think we least expect it (while Congress and the DOD do nothing about a hole in our south-facing radar, that those 2 enemies have tested and put into orbit the hardware for exploiting that hole...)
The general public will sleep right through everything until it’s too late. But CONGRESS, OTOH, could still actually do something to close our vulnerabilities. If they have the sense to do so.
We need to help them have the sense to do so.
