It is an amazing testament to how bad the other candidates were that Mark Sanford ran away with the race in South Carolinas first congressional district.
A deeply flawed man, he was the one guy the primary voters knew wouldnt go wobbly in Washington. But they, and I, presumed he was over the issues with his ex-wife. Unfortunately, a couple of weeks ago we learned things were not settled.
The NRCC and GOP abandoned Mark Sanford as a result. In a race the GOP could still even now win, the GOP decided it would rather lose than win.
Unfortunately for the GOP, losing South Carolinas Republican first congressional district will give labor unions a massive win.
The unions, which passionately hate Boeing producing the 787 in Charleston, have poured money in to help Elizabeth Colbert Busch. Right now, thanks to the NRCC pulling out of the race, the Democrats are outspending Mark Sanford three to one.
Yesterday, the Sanford campaign discovered Colbert-Bush has gotten a massive pile of money from another ultra-liberal group. But Republicans are doing nothing.
At this time, even with all Sanfords flaws, it seems ridiculous that the GOP would give labor unions a massive win. The media will herald it as a rejection, even in South Carolina, of Republicans. The unions will herald it as a major win for big labor.
In the process. the first district would get a stooge for Nancy Pelosi and a puppet for labor unions against Boeing.
Mark Sanford can still win. But hes going to need a lot of help. The chickens at the NRCC ran as quickly as they could. They need to man up and fight like hell.

Sanford is a part of this stupidity.
What he did was the height of idiocy. He deserves to lose.
If conservatives won’t stand up for principle, I don’t care what party affiliation they wear, they don’t deserve to win.
I don’t love Sanford but this is seriously stupid.
If the GOP could support pro abort, pro gay marriage Scott Brown, they can certainly support Sanford.
Cojnservatives and even many Republicans still think the Republican Party is on their side. It is not. It is fighting hard to survive in what it sees as a permanent Democratic Socialist State. It strives to hang on to the role of Officially Tolerated Opposition so that the Regime can maintain a fig leaf of democracy. But when that regime does come to pass the rulers will no longer have any need for an Opposition and the Roves and Grahams and Luntzs and McCains go to the cellars right behind the known conservatives.
Sanford is Todd Akins without the speech impediment.
If Colbert-Bush wins, she will get tossed out in 2014. If the Appalachian Trail Hiker wins, SC may be stuck with him for years to come.
What about the voters....didn’t they support him the primary??? What were they thinking???? Let’s nominate the most damaged candidate possible???? We’re there ANY alternatives????
Only way in hell a democrat winning in SC is for republicans to stay home and don’t vote. End of story. Sanford did nothing any other father would not have done. He wanted to watch the Super Bowl with his son. It was nothing. Now the GOP throws him under the Bus.
It really does convince someone that the RNC leadership of the GOP are hellbent upon losing.
The republican national commity is a joke, they fire successful chairmen and re-higher unmitigated failures. Theses people quite obviously are doing everything they can to lose. How do we get rid of these tratiors?
Support the sanctity of marriage! Vote Sanford!...uhhh....
“Only way in hell a democrat winning in SC is for republicans to stay home and dont vote. End of story. Sanford did nothing any other father would not have done. He wanted to watch the Super Bowl with his son. It was nothing. Now the GOP throws him under the Bus.”
Your probably right about that. It was indeed wrong to deny him that right.
Mark Sanford is a hell of a conservative. He was a great governor of SC.
Post of the day.
“Sanford is a part of this stupidity.
What he did was the height of idiocy. He deserves to lose.”
Not at this costs. Sanford may be a bastard who should be removed in the regular election season but the democrat is far worse.
The establishment is not to blame for lying, cheating Mark Sanford. He was certainly NOT the establishment candidate.
Erick Erickson endorsed this idiot, and supposed “values voters” in SC1 decided to give him a “second chance” for redemption. It was obvious Sanford is a selfish, unstable tool and now we are likely to lose the seat. Erickson shares the blame for this.
Yes, Republicans/conservatives should vote for Sanford over the Stephen Colbert’s liberal sister, but we didn’t get into this mess because of our “stupid party” - it was entirely because of our stupid voters (and morons like Erickson).
The unfortunate likely outcome is Sanford loses, is politically done (hopefully forever) and we elect a real conservative for the seat in 2014. In the meantime, yes, the unions do get a victory and we have to put up with Elizabeth Colbert Busch for awhile. It’s a terrible shame, but this one is on the supposedly conservative voters in that R+11 district.
Anyone who would sell his convictions for a little South American poontang would sell them in office. Sorry, you can’t separate these issues. We’d only find that Sanford is a left-lurching RINO like the rest of them.
“If Colbert-Bush wins, she will get tossed out in 2014. If the Appalachian Trail Hiker wins, SC may be stuck with him for years to come.”
If the South Carolina GOP can elect Sanford to run as the GOP canadit in 2013 what makes you think he won’t pull off a similar scam in 2014.
I don’t know whats going on with theses people. It looks like a name reconciliation contest. Which suggest that we have done a very poor job of promoting new republicans in mass media.
No matter how repulsive, I would vote for ANY Republican over ANY Democrat. Just that 2 vote swing in the House (and especially in the Senate) could make a difference. That’s what it has become...a numbers game. So, I never sit out an election and I never vote for a Democrat.
