What about the voters....didn’t they support him the primary??? What were they thinking???? Let’s nominate the most damaged candidate possible???? We’re there ANY alternatives????
Yes, they did and there were plenty of alternatives. Sanford managed to fool supposedly conservative voters in a bright red district not once, but twice. He won the original primary and then crushed his opponent in the run off.
We have the good, honest, decent, traditional people in our party, but we have this curse of nominating terrible candidates all too often (Sanford, Akin, Angle, O'Donnell, McMahon, etc, etc). You just don't see Democrat voters throwing away winnable seats the way we do. I guess it's because they spend ALL their time thinking about politics and conservatives tend to get on with their lives and think less about the political ramifications of their primary vote.
About 70,000 people, roughly, participated in the primary. 46,000 participated in the runoff.
54,000 Republicans voted in the primary, so there was a drop off of barely 8,000 voters ~ what this means, BTW, is if Sanford gets as many votes as he did in the runoff, he'll beat the Democrat anyway.
If I were the RNC House campaign committee I probably wouldn't send him any money either because he doesn't need it.
On the other hand, there's a theory that if you are a labor union and you put enough money in a campaign you will win ~ even if everybody voting is a Republican.
