Losing South Carolina (GOP throws Mark Sanford under bus)
http://www.redstate.com ^ | April 30, 2013 | Erick Erickson

It is an amazing testament to how bad the other candidates were that Mark Sanford ran away with the race in South Carolina’s first congressional district.

A deeply flawed man, he was the one guy the primary voters knew wouldn’t go wobbly in Washington. But they, and I, presumed he was over the issues with his ex-wife. Unfortunately, a couple of weeks ago we learned things were not settled.

The NRCC and GOP abandoned Mark Sanford as a result. In a race the GOP could still — even now — win, the GOP decided it would rather lose than win.

Unfortunately for the GOP, losing South Carolina’s Republican first congressional district will give labor unions a massive win.

The unions, which passionately hate Boeing producing the 787 in Charleston, have poured money in to help Elizabeth Colbert Busch. Right now, thanks to the NRCC pulling out of the race, the Democrats are outspending Mark Sanford three to one.

Yesterday, the Sanford campaign discovered Colbert-Bush has gotten a massive pile of money from another ultra-liberal group. But Republicans are doing nothing.

At this time, even with all Sanford’s flaws, it seems ridiculous that the GOP would give labor unions a massive win. The media will herald it as a rejection, even in South Carolina, of Republicans. The unions will herald it as a major win for big labor.

In the process. the first district would get a stooge for Nancy Pelosi and a puppet for labor unions against Boeing.

Mark Sanford can still win. But he’s going to need a lot of help. The chickens at the NRCC ran as quickly as they could. They need to man up and fight like hell.

I supported and voted for Akins, but he should have stepped aside once he stepped in the trap McCaskill had laid for him and the handwriting was on the wall.

He was an adulterer that lied to his wife, his children, his staff, and the people of South Carolina. He might otherwise be conservative, but he isn't a "hell of a conservative" nor was he a "great" governor.

We’d only find that Sanford is a left-lurching RINO like the rest of them.

As superior as some Texans are to others on FR, this time I call your bluff. You have based your opinion on a lack of knowldege.

How's the rarefied air today up there in New Hampshire?

What about the voters....didn’t they support him the primary??? What were they thinking???? Let’s nominate the most damaged candidate possible???? We’re there ANY alternatives????

Yes, they did and there were plenty of alternatives. Sanford managed to fool supposedly conservative voters in a bright red district not once, but twice. He won the original primary and then crushed his opponent in the run off.

We have the good, honest, decent, traditional people in our party, but we have this curse of nominating terrible candidates all too often (Sanford, Akin, Angle, O'Donnell, McMahon, etc, etc). You just don't see Democrat voters throwing away winnable seats the way we do. I guess it's because they spend ALL their time thinking about politics and conservatives tend to get on with their lives and think less about the political ramifications of their primary vote.

We don't need to lose that seat to the powerful unions.

They are going to have to help him just for that reason alone.

This is war; a battle of how to manage this nation.

so let me get this right,
we have a guy running for our side who made a mistake but the stupid party does nothing to help much and we have him now looking to lose in a conservative area, in a conservative state

the stupid party strikes again.

This is Colberts sister for crying out loud, surely even the elitist on our side would rather we win this seat and not let a liberal get it in a conservative state and area, they can’t be that stupid can they?

Really, abandoning his job and wife and family to meet up with his South American sweet heart is something any other father would do?

I have GOT to tell my wife and my boss this amazing news!

Yes, but that's not my point: The GOPe not only did not support Akins, they said many things in public that only helped re-elect McCaskill.

Sanford did nothing any other father would not have done. He wanted to watch the Super Bowl with his son. It was nothing. Now the GOP throws him under the Bus.

Sanford did a lot more than that, and it started long before the Super Bowl. Sanford betrayed his wife, his family and his state by his actions. And now he shows that he has learned nothing by repeatedly violating a restraining order and trespassing on his ex-wife's property.

If he wanted to watch the Super Bowl with his son, why not take the son to his home instead? Or maybe take him to a restaurant or pizza place that had the game on the TV? He had many options other than going into his ex-wife's home - this was just another example of him believing that the rules do not apply to him. The GOP is wise to abandon him. As a previous poster said, the GOP can regain the seat in a little over a year.

he might have been stupid but to lose a senate seat in SC in a conservative area just shows how stupid some on our side and party are if they think losing is good to a liberal in this area.

http://www.politico.com/2013-election/results/house/primary/south-carolina/ ~ there's a flip/flop here that takes you from the primary to the runoff.

About 70,000 people, roughly, participated in the primary. 46,000 participated in the runoff.

54,000 Republicans voted in the primary, so there was a drop off of barely 8,000 voters ~ what this means, BTW, is if Sanford gets as many votes as he did in the runoff, he'll beat the Democrat anyway.

If I were the RNC House campaign committee I probably wouldn't send him any money either because he doesn't need it.

On the other hand, there's a theory that if you are a labor union and you put enough money in a campaign you will win ~ even if everybody voting is a Republican.

Did the NRCC force Stanford to have two of his sons on the same stage as his mistress who they never met before? Did the NRCC force Stanford to violate his divorce agreement by going to his ex-wife’s house uninvited? If Stanford wanted political redemption he needed to stay on the straight and narrow and he could not even do that.

Stanford threw the race away by stalking his exwife. It’s on him. Don’t blame the GOP for cutting their losses. Only a fool invest more $ in Sanford at this point. Guy is still self-destructing.

"But they, and I, presumed he was over the issues with his ex-wife."

That statement illustrates Erickson's naivete. This isn't your garden variety divorce. He left his office to go to another continent to see his mistress on Father's Day weekend without telling another co-worker or family member where he was going. That screams to me that Sanford is nuts. As in, not wrapped too tight. The impromptu press conference on his return, where no contrition for his actions were exhibited but a mush filled ode to his mistress was puked up for the press, just cemented that view.

Erickson was surprised that he entered his ex wife's home against court orders? I'm not surprised because it fits right into Sanford's infantile mindset and history of self entitlement and stupidity. Any of the others running against him in the primary didn't carry his baggage and would have done fine in the general election. I blame the voters of SC who share the same naive mindset as Erickson.

It would seem to me that labor union support in SC would be the kiss of death....almost as bad as having Obama’s endorsement in that state.
