IN the spring of 2010, a new patient came to see me to find out if he had attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. He had all the classic symptoms: procrastination, forgetfulness, a propensity to lose things and, of course, the inability to pay attention consistently. But one thing was unusual. His symptoms had started only two years earlier, when he was 31.
Though I treat a lot of adults for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, the presentation of this case was a violation of an important diagnostic criterion: symptoms must date back to childhood. It turned out he first started having these problems the month he began his most recent job, one that required him to rise at 5 a.m., despite the fact that he was a night owl.
The patient didnt have A.D.H.D., I realized, but a chronic sleep deficit...

One study, published in 2004 in the journal Sleep, looked at 34 children with A.D.H.D. Every one of them showed a deficit of delta sleep, compared with only a handful of the 32 control subjects...

Of the 78 children getting the tonsillectomies, 28 percent were found to have A.D.H.D., compared with only 7 percent of the control group.
Even more stunning was what the studys authors found a year after the surgeries, when they followed up with the children. A full half of the original A.D.H.D. group who received tonsillectomies 11 of 22 children no longer met the criteria for the condition. In other words, what had appeared to be A.D.H.D. had been resolved by treating a sleeping problem...

Very interesting!
Relevant to your family’s involvement in the sleep lab.
Working the slave population 24/7 to keep em docile.
Mothers have to get those 6-week-old babies and the rest of the kids out of bed by 6AM to handover to strangers to raise down at the daycare.
No one remembers that little kids used to be in bed by 8PM and woke up on their own schedule, at about 6-7AM. With a nap, they got the sleep they needed to thrive.
Mom’s career/happiness is more important now days.
We homeschool. They sleep. School start time is for the benefit of employers.
I will check with LabLady when I get home and see if she has read this article. She is usually very good at keeping up on things pertaining to unusual symptoms and sleep deprivation.
I seldom get much delta sleep so I can understand this article quite easily.
Thanks for the ping.
You’re welcome. I recall that Anoreth’s life improved dramatically once she had her tonsils and adenoids out. I should have that checked on Frank, who has never slept well, when he goes to the doctor in June.
My tonsils were taken out when I was 14. My current sleep problems have to do with CFIDS, and I don’t know that there is any way to rectify the sleep problems without nedication.
I do know that between the lack of sound sleep and the amount of pain I’m in on a daily basis have a direct bearing on my BP. I’m not going to allow the medicos to treat the hypertension as a disease, when it is only a symptom of something being wrong within my body.
But thanks, again for the ping.
My bet --- Millions of them...

Attention-deficit problems are far from the only reasons to take our lack of quality sleep seriously. Laboratory animals die when they are deprived of delta sleep. Chronic delta sleep deficits in humans are implicated in many diseases, including depression, heart disease, hypertension, obesity, chronic pain, diabetes and cancer, not to mention thousands of fatigue-related car accidents each year.
If the shoe fits, fix it.
FReepmail me if you want on or off the diabetes ping list.

As someone who suffers from a life-threatening case of Willis Eckbom Disease w/ PLMW(formerly known as Restless Leg Syndrome and Periodic Limb Movement while Awake), I know all too well of both the physical and mental affects of long-term sleep deprivation. I fully expect it will take my life.
All I can say is wow. This has been one of the most interesting articles I’ve ever read in connection with diabetes. In addition to all my other health problems, there is definitely a sleep problem as well.
After reading this article, I can understand some of my sleep problems. Always have had a very busy dream state which seems to take up a lot of my sleep time; maybe not so much with delta state.
Has clonidine not been successful for you in treating your problem?
Where are you getting that? There aren't too many moms these days who are throwing the kids into daycare because they want to. They're doing it in large part because Uncle Sam as well as state and local governments are taking over 60% of Dad's income in taxes, and it's a lot harder to live on one income than it was when my parents, and yours, were raising children. You may hear horror stories of selfish yuppie mothers, but they're outnumbered a thousand to one by the devoted mothers who are just trying to keep the electricity turned on.

Thanks! I have tried it....30+ yrs and everything from soup to nuts, marij. to methadone...Dopamine Agonist worked for a little while, but now, nothing stops the severe involuntary movement and nothing puts me to sleep despite the involuntary movement...except anesthesia.
Do you have a link to such a study?
Women are pulling their sleepy kids out of bed, throwing them into the car, and delivering the kids to strangers to be raised. That’s abuse.
