How carjacking victim of Boston bombers left his iPhone in his Mercedes so police could track them and thwart their plans to drive to New York
********************************************
FBI officials released surveillance video of suspected bombers on April 18
- Hours later Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev hijacked a Mercedes
- 'Danny,' the car's owner says the men discussed traveling to NYC
- Officials have confirmed the Tsarnaevs were carrying a pressure cooker device and 5 pipe-bombs to detonate in Times Square
- Driver managed to escape when the brothers refilled on gas
- Danny says he left his iPhone in the Mercedes so police could track the car
- Police intercepted the brothers and a gun battle broke out early on April 19 in Watertown, Mass.
- Tamerlan, 26, was killed and Dzhokhar, 19, was captured nearly a day later
The driver whose car was hijacked by the Boston bombing suspects has revealed how authorities used the iPhone he left in the stolen car to track the fleeing brothers, thwarting their plans to attack New York City.
Known only as 'Danny,' the 26-year-old Chinese entrepreneur whose car was stolen, says he had pulled his car over to the side of the road to text when Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev approached his Mercedes at 11pm on April 18.
After an hour and a half in their company, Danny said this week that he managed to escape but purposely left his smartphone in the car and alerted police of the phone's tracking technology.

I pull over to text, though usually I'll just wait until the next scheduled stop.
If it's time critical, they'll call and I can talk while driving with my bluetooth, otherwise it will wait.

They should fire the head of Boston’s FBI, and replace him/her with Danny from China.

Regardless if he did or didn’t pull over to text - the idea of consciously leaving his phone in the car with the forethought of it being used to locate the car, is quite a stretch.
C’mon, the dude says he was scared, trying to figure his escape opportunity, they want me to believe that during the moments he had to flee, he actually figured leaving his phone behind would aid the cops? Really? It’s already been established that his vehicle has some new tech device that would allow the cops to find it.

left his iPhone in his Mercedes...to track them.I doubt he LEFT his iPhone intentionally. I suspect that they took it from him at some point.

How could the car jacking victim have been in their company for an hour and a half, then escape, leave the phone in the car for the police to track and then the police tracked them to pretty much the same neighborhood they started in?????
Wouldn’t they have been an hour and a half down the road????
What did they do for an hour and a half???
Why was the green honda that belonged to the terrorist at the shootout with the high jacked suv???
None of this makes sense. We are not being told the truth. Duh!
To: AllAmericanGirl44
Perhaps. He does work in high tech as an entrepreneur, perhaps he’s worked on or invested in an app that uses tracking as one of its features. I have two on my own phone, Star Walk which needs my location to know what parts of the sky I can see, and GasBuddy, which locates nearest and cheapest gas stations.
Anyway, if he spends many of his waking hours thinking about ways to make money with the locator function, it’s not unreasonable that he would think of this particular use under other, more stressful, circumstances.

More and more cars sold here have an OnStar type feature.GM,BMW,Mercedes and Toyota offer such an option, and maybe other manufacturers as well. With this option the police can track the vehicle's location *exactly* as it moves or when it's standing still.GM’s version,OnStar, can even be used to disable the vehicle while it's in motion. And of course iPhones and at least some Android phones can be tracked too.
