Talks to revive gun control legislation are quietly under way on Capitol Hill as a bipartisan group of senators seeks a way to bridge the differences that led to last weeks collapse of the most serious effort to overhaul the countrys gun laws in 20 years.
Drawing on the lessons from battles in the 1980s and 90s over the Brady Bill, which failed in Congress several times before ultimately passing, gun control supporters believe they can prevail by working on a two-pronged strategy. First, they are identifying senators who might be willing to change their votes and support a background check system with fewer loopholes.
Second, they are looking to build a national campaign that would better harness overwhelming public support for universal background checks which many national polls put at near 90 percent approval to pressure lawmakers.
Senators Joe Manchin III, Democrat of West Virginia, and Patrick J. Toomey, Republican of Pennsylvania, have been talking in recent days about how they could persuade more senators to support their bill to expand background checks for gun buyers, which drew backing from only four Republicans last week.
Were going to work it hard, Mr. Manchin said Thursday, adding that he was looking at tweaking the language of his bill in a way that he believed would satisfy senators who, for example, felt that background checks on person-to-person gun sales would be too onerous for people who live in rural areas far from a sporting goods store.
Those concerns were an issue for Alaskas senators, Lisa Murkowski, a Republican, and Mark Begich, a Democrat.

How would your proposed change in the law prevented what happened in Sandy Hook?
If it wouldn't have prevented it, why are you using that tragedy as a justification for your proposed changes?
How about an open season, where can I get my license??
“which many national polls put at near 90 percent approval”
Yet that is not true, especially among those who read the proposals.
I'm so sick of these paid hacks.
Obama’s ONLY (and I DO mean ONLY) goal here is to get this thing over to the House to die so he can blame that on Republicans and raise money off of it.
Their interest it to eventually have a record of EVERY gun in the land so the communists will confiscate them. It will be the only way our corrupt government can control the masses and enslave us.
I suspect the Senators know that the only thing worse, politically, than supporting the original bill is flipping on it.
I suspect that they do know that and won’t support something that the NRA opposes.
No more gun control.
In fact, start pulling back all the laws out there.
STOP IT NOW.

Oh, it doesn't need to be true, this is the new America where democrats and their pals in the "news" media get to invent the narrative until their agenda is fully implemented.
It is not any “bi-partisan” group of senators. They are all statists. There is no disagreement among them. They all desire total government and no opposition from the subjects. Calling them Republicans and Democrats is like differentiating them by their first names or by whether or not they are bald or left-handed.
Sounds like a great opportunity for a COUNTER-PROTEST.
Of course, in my state of Konnecticut, all of my Federal legislators are Obama-pawns........
If you are doing a background check to determine whether or not I should be able to buy a gun, why do you need to know what type of gun I am buying, let alone the make, model and serial number?
The only thing that matters to this government is advancing its communist agenda.
That’s all, nothing else.
I’ve been promoting the concept of Official Reality, and this fits that rubric well.
These a-holes should be taken to the alley!
WOW, blown away by this comment: “IS THIS THE AMERICA WE WANT?”
This is a 10-strike winning phrase. Please consider using it often.
Didn’t Tumor say right after the vote that he wouldn’t bring anything back up? That didn’t take long.
