Out of the entire universe of those who could have won the first phase construction contract for Californias high speed rail boondoggle, who would stand out as the last person who would win it if there were no political patronage.
Put another way, who is the most likely person to win it if there is political patronage?
Both questions have the same answer: Richard Blum, the husband of California senator Diane Feinstein.
So, who won the contract? Blum, of course, as the principle owner of Tutor Perini, the lead firm in the three-firm consortium selected by the California High Speed Rail Authority.

And you know it will be a lemon.
The only high speed rail will be sliding your butt down the handrail at the station.
Just lucky, I guess!
And may the most politically connected man win!
As Gomer would say, Golllllly gee, imagine that.
I’m sure this deal was blessed by Capo De Tutti Capi Obama so it’s all good.
In all seriousness, this should be an outrage.
I thought Gomer, too, only him saying “Surprise. Surprise.”
Come on . everyone knows all the bids were created equal, just some bids were more equal than others.
Well, we know one thing... guns won’t be allowed on that rail line.
OH where is Willie Green when we need him. He’d be telling us how tax-payer funded high speed rail is the best thing since indoor plumbing and that it alone will save California from doom (even if the project is rife with corruption!)
Yes, I’ll admit I miss the Willie Green Happy Choo Choo threads. I like trains and think they are a great idea BUT passenger rail doesn’t make money in this country and never will. If private industry won’t do something then it usually shouldn’t be done.
The FIX was in...
The Pelosi family can’t be far behind.
How many billion$ will the government give their corporation before it goes bankrupt and closes?
Willie Green 'came out' over on LP. Turns out he was a union bastard, an avowed and self-admitted socialist, who had been a deep-cover mole in FR for years. He constantly posted layoff notices on FR during the Bush years, but when Obama got in office and he was on LP, he started posting Happy Economy threads. His love of trains was because he opposed anything but collectivisation, including transportation.
He was a whackjob leftist and a son of a bitch. I'm glad he's dead.
DiFi’s hubby will build the Train to Nowhere in California! This is a metaphor for the Golden State — nowhere.
I'm not a 6th grader. No 6th grader could figure out how to rig for self profit the tax payed system like a mafioso."
It’s amazing how the randomness and chance of free and open competition in public contracting can make such a lightning strike.
