TORONTO - Toronto Police are looking for a thief with a taste for very good scotch the kind that goes for $26,000 a bottle.
Investigators on Tuesday asked the public for help in catching a man who walked out of an LCBO outlet on Cooper St. in the Queens Quay-Yonge St. area on April 7 with a 700-milliliter bottle of Glenfiddich Single Malt scotch that he picked up in the stores Vintages section.
The man paid for a bottle of wine but left without paying for the 50-year-old high-end hooch, police said.
Carol Anderson, an Ottawa-based scotch taster for more than 50 years, said she was shocked by the theft of the luxury booze.
Even whiskies that are $150 are under lock and key, and on display in a cabinet, Anderson said. If I want to buy that bottle (which was stolen), I have to go and get somebody with a key.
It makes you wonder how it could have been stolen.
Anderson said such pricey bottles of scotch are predominately featured at charity auctions because theyre relatively rare.
The most expensive bottle of scotch ever sold at auction went for $460,000 in 2010, she recalled.
The price for rare Scotch whiskey tends to rise in value every year. So some people keep them for investment purposes, said Anderson.
There are only 50 bottles of the brand that was stolen.
An LCBO spokesman refused comment on whether a store employee escorted the thief to the cash register after he obtained the bottle.
A security camera captured an image of the suspect who is described as white, 35-55, about 5-foot-10 and clean-shaven. He wore a Burberry plaid shirt, brown hat, black jeans and brown trench coat.
Police requested anyone with information to call 416-808-5100.
Not the sharpest tools running that store...
/johnny
I could do the time for that crime....
“Not the sharpest tools running that store...”
No surprise since the government runs the liquor stores in Toronto.
Well, at least we know it couldn’t have been Ted Kennedy.
Looking for an insurance payout?
Oh, my aching head. Nobodies gonna believe the dream I had last night. There were naked girls and scotch. Oh, the scotch was heavenly. Does anybody have a dozen aspirin please?
BTW, would this picture fit on a milk carton?
I’ve got a bottle of tsunami water worth more than that.
I can envision some wino laying in the gutter telling some other wino that he had the best bottle of Strawberry Hill that he had ever drunk.
I suppose the question might be WTH is scotch that rare and expensive doing sitting in a liquor store?
Eh.....I like Bourbon better.
Just polished off a reasonably priced bottle of Oban the other night in honor of the bombers getting whacked and captured.
I prefer Macallan 18, 15, or cask strength...maybe Balvenie doublewood...but Oban is a reasonably priced alternative.
Bainbridge Island Wa puts out a Battle Point whiskey that is very nice...
or better yet, what in the hell makes a bottle of booze worth $26,000? Does it cure cancer and add 10 years to your life when you drink it? A fool and his money.
Whisky-a-Gone-Gone.
I'll have to stick with The Famous Grouse
