Parents plan to protest the Readington Middle School principal's decision to the school board Tuesday night.

Teen girls will not be permitted to wear strapless dresses to Readington Middle School's eighth grade dance because the principal thinks it would distract boys, according to an upset parent.

But, by design, a strapless dress has to cover up more than a spaghetti strap dress. Don’t ask me how I know this stuff. LOL

Well I applaud the courage ofthis principal. We certainly need more like this. Why can’t middle school girls (or high school girls) dress modestly? What’s wrong with that?

I never understand how it is wrong for a boy to inappropriately touch a girl, yet girls can visually assault boys.

I take it it was the Muslim students that complained?

Are these the same parents that buy thong underwear for their little daughters. Instead of being happy that the school is calling for modesty, they complain. Take away the make-up, false nails and sexy underwear/clothes and let them be children for petes sake!!

Girls were wearing stapless dresses in the 50s.

I'm not exactly enamored with teenage style sense and haven't been for awhile, but principle Sharon Moffat is going a little overboard here.

I know of some inner-city high schools, where the administration is not exactly conservative, that have had to lay down the law on Prom dress codes in recent years.

Shame on the clothing manufacturers and designers who have pushed the edge of the envelope on slutty for teenage girls beyond what even they could stomach.

High school students wore strapless dresses in the 50s, not students of middle school or junior high, as 7-8th was then called. Big difference in levels of maturity between 12/13 and 17/18.

Jr. High is probably a little young for strapless ... so he’s not wrong. I wouldn’t let my daughter wear one at that age. But, its a parental decision, not a school administration decision ... so he probably overstepped. They’re not grossly inappropriate to the extent that school officials ought to get involved.

I thought the purpose of school dances was for girls to distract boys.

I cannot understand other men, who ridicule modest apparel for women and girls, only to later change their minds when they have wives and daughters of their own.

Reminds me of a woman I knew, who complained that her husband bought her skimpy outfits, then would accuse her of inviting the attention of other men.

Outraged?! Outraged?!

Who could be outraged at such a rule, other than middle school boys?

My daughter attends a public middle school in our little Ohio town on the border with W.Virginia. Girls are not allowed to wear strapless anything, and if they do, they have to wear a sweater or something else over it.

If they wear tank tops, the straps have to be two fingers’ width. No torn jeans (for anyone, male or female), and shorts, skirts, and dresses have to be a certain length—if you hold your hands at your sides, they can be no higher than the end of the middle finger.

You are right...the search for clothes for my teenage daughter is often frustrating. Even trying to find a decent dress for her for church is an exercise in futility sometimes.
