Russian intel: Tamerlan Tsarnaev met with suspected Chechen militant several times

CBS isn't letting the thread drop on Tamerlan Tsarnaev's six-month odyssey in the Caucasus, and neither are federal investigators, apparently. Russian intelligence says that the elder brother in the Boston Marathon bombing met with a suspected militant on several occasions while staying in Dagestan, and the US is taking a closer look at those contacts even as the younger brother insists the two acted alone:

The Wall Street Journal has more:

U.S. investigators are looking into a Russian intelligence report that alleged Boston bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev met with a suspected militant during his six-month visit to Russia in 2012, according to American law-enforcement officials.

In the aftermath of the bombings, some American counterterrorism officials received information from law-enforcement officials in Makhachkala, Dagestan, detailing alleged contacts between Mr. Tsarnaev and a suspected militant being tracked by Russian officials, according to a law-enforcement official briefed on the Boston Marathon investigation.

It’s not just Tsarnaev that’s being investigated either, but also the FBI:

The accuracy of that report and whether it was shared before the attack in Boston is a subject of debate. According to one account, Russia’s security service told the Federal Bureau of Investigation about it in November. U.S. law-enforcement officials said they didn’t receive any such information and are trying to determine if it is true.

Mr. Tsarnaev’s intersection with Russia security authorities came after he was interviewed by FBI agents in the U.S. in 2011. How these contacts were handled by both countries likely will be critical in determining whether officials missed possible warning signs, and whether poor communications between the two countries hampered cooperation.

Almost immediately after the FBI’s first contacts with Tsarnaev became known, Russia insisted that they tried to warn the US about him, and that the FBI didn’t respond to them. The FBI now claims the same thing about Russian intelligence:

The FBI interview was conducted at Russia’s request and produced no suspicious links, said a senior U.S. law enforcement official. Repeated follow-up questions to Russian authorities about Mr. Tsarnaev went unanswered, U.S. officials said.

It’s possible that Tsarnaev’s six-month trip to Dagestan didn’t produce any contacts with radicals in the area, and that Tamerlan’s decision to conduct terror attacks was entirely independent. That would make the Dagestan adventure very coincidental, though, and it’s difficult to believe that his sudden fanaticism and identification with radical Islamists on his return less than a year ago had no roots at all in his geographic juxtaposition with radical Islamists in the Caucasus. So far, it seems that the Russians consider that theory a little fantastical, too.

Sorry, the FBI is already telling us that these guys acted alone. When is the US government going to stop pretending that a terrorist attack is not really a terrorist attack unless it is done by external forces sent to America under the direct control of some foreign government or terrorist organization? If muslims resident in the US are being radicalized by foreign activists, either political or religious, then it is just as serious (and perhaps more so) than an external attack. It’s all part of the same jihad.

Russia would LOVE American backing in their fight against Chechnian militants.

Expect Russia to be more than cooperative with investigators on anything that demonstrates a link between Chechnia and the Boston bombings.

Yeh....And I don't think Russia liked that. I'll bet Putin said "What a jerk".

We've really been sparring the last few months....First with the adoption bit...then with the passport denials which we pulled.

Here's the biggie for me....Russia is trying to keep the Muslims down. Obama is trying to put them on a pedestal. WE'RE nuts.

P.S. I never got why people go out of the country to adopt.

“I believe what the Russians say over our own government.”

Sadly, so do I. Right now, KGB beats FBI for veracity in any case like this, thanks to our America and
American hating, communist, Mudslime, traitor POTUS.

RE: P.S. I never got why people go out of the country to adopt.

Adoption in the good old US of A is getting to be very complicated ( what with lawsuits a plenty ). Ever heard of the case where a child was adopted at her birth, grew up with the adoptive family ( whom she knew as her mother and father ) until the REAL biological mother changed her mind and wanted her child back after 2 years?

Guess what happened? The courts RETURNED the child to the biological mother with the baby CRYING for her adoptive mother !!

Who wants to go through that experience once again?

Now you understand why Americans go OUT of this country to adopt.

Given leftists may well be sympathetic to Chechen terrorist rebels, is it possible our request for additional information from the Russian’s was interpreted as insulting, insulent or snarky in it’s context as written?

The Russians have already fought them twice, then poured billions into the country to rebuild it. I think the Russians are capable of fighting them on their own. It’s OUR side who has no clue what they’re doing.

we gotta remember how the Russians defeated the Chechens — THEY BOMBED THE HELL OUT OF THEM! NO MERCY, NO CONCERN FOR COLLATERAL DAMAGE, WOMEN, CHILDREN, or HUMAN SHIELDS.

They just totally FLATTENED Grozny.

We on the other hand, if God forbid, there is a necessity to go to war again, will try to minimize the loss of human life by using drones.

THAT is the difference between Russia and us.

BREAKING: Napolitano Admits DHS Knew of Boston Bomber’s Russia Trip
Stand With Arizona ^ | 04-23-2013 | John Hill

nappy_fail

Slipped through her fingers: Big sis admits DHS knew Boston jihadist traveled to Russia in 2012.

-

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano stunned a Senate panel when she admitted that her agency knew of alleged Boston bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev’s trip to Russia last year even though his name was misspelled on a travel document, as she testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee on sweeping immigration amnesty legislation.

The admission that her department was aware of Tsarnaev’s six-month trip to Dagestan - a hotbed of radical Islamic activity - surprised two ‘Gang of Eight’ senators, Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Chuck Schumer (D-NY), who had been using an the hearing to try and establish that the DHS didn’t catch his travels under the current visa system, and that their amnesty bill would fix the apparent glitch. This was clearly not the case, raising further disturbing questions about why U.S. security services failed to keep track of the man who went on to kill 4 people in Boston last week.

Both senators had claimed that the misspelling caused the FBI to miss the trip. Graham, told the secretary that it contradicted what he’d been told by the FBI:

“They told me that they had no knowledge of him leaving or coming back so I would like to talk to you more about this case,” Graham told Napolitano.

Napolitano said that even though Tsarnaev’s name was misspelled, “redundancies in the system” allowed his departure to be captured by U.S. authorities in January 2012:

“The system pinged when he was leaving the United States. By the time he returned all investigations had been closed,” Napolitano said.

The Russia trip is now seen as important to determining how and when Tsarnaev, the older Boston bomber who died in a firefight with police, became radicalized, and whether he had ties to others.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev was investigated by the FBI at Russia’s request and his name was included in a federal government travel-screening database after that, law enforcement officials have told The Associated Press.

As SWA reported yesterday, Russian security services warned the FBI in November 2012 that Tsarnaev was seen meeting – six times – with a person involved in militant Islamic underground movement in Dagestan. This Islamist leader, Gadzhimurad Dolgatov (who also went by the name Amir Abu Dujana) was killed after a fierce gunbattle with Russian security forces in Dagastan in December 2012

The visit “would lead one to believe that that’s probably where he got that final radicalization to push him to commit acts of violence and where he may have received training” in terrorist techniques, U.S. House Intelligence Committee, Rep. Mike Rogers told NBC.

Yet another claim by the amnesty advocates is exposed, and a new twist to the disturbing story of the “jihadist who got away” emerges which further undermines trust that the DHS can effectively protect Americans from the massive increase of foreigners with visas that the ‘Gang of Eight’ bill would bring to our shores.

My wife and I adopted from China...simply put....once the adoption was finalized...there was no chance of anyone coming in and taking her from us...and that was very important to us...

So the government is not doing what they’re supposed to do, and doing what they’re not supposed to do, and taking all our money to do it. We need to figure out a way to fire them since elections don’t work.

I believe the Russians. This administration and it's agencies, including the FBI, didn't want to see any Islamic terrorists here, period, even if Tamerlane Tsarnaev was running around shouting "Allahu Akbar!" right in front of their noses.

That’s a good question. I saw their arrested young Kazakstan friends somehow had a nice BMW with a terrorista #1 novelty front plate.

I also read that a Russian relative insisted the elder bomber had already been radicalized before his trip to Russia because of his interaction with him on his arrival.
