Play the victim card. His brother made him specifically target an 8-year old boy? He made him drive over his brother to flee the cops? Made him shoot himself in the throat?
And how did this “defend Islam”? Where was the message to the media bragging of the accomplishment? Where was the list of grievances? Where was the selection of “target”?
All it did was paint a horrible picture of the “moderate” muslims in his family and friends who recognized them but did not turn this information over to the authorities. Harboring a fugitive can be criminal too.

If there is reality of the concept of need to know, then One can reasonably believe Zokar did not know the hierarchy beyond the isolated two man cell.
The older brother is a different story. The piece called him the ring leader but there was apparently no ring. There were just the two of them.
It is likely that somewhere there lurks one man that runs perhaps three or four other such very small isolated hit teams. He provides resources to implement the training.
The running involves the dispatching the team leader to training somewhere in jihad land. There are no lose ends, no unraveling once that person is dead.
Having said all that, Zokar is still guilty as hell. He has faith but limited knowledge. He is supposed to be dead.

This guy has a good lawyer to advise him how to try to beat this charge of murder. I don’t think it is going to work. I believe the brother was the heavy but the younger one is not stupid and was not forced to help his brother. He did it because he wanted to kill people and then “party”. It is sick but not excusable.
Blame older brother! He figured out these lies all by himself! Without the help of a lawyer even!
Now that the teens and young children had their limbs blown off they are no longer a threat to Islam...phew.
