It’s too close to their base assumptions on which their ideology is built.
If they admit they’re wrong on this, its an admission that the whole way they view the world is wrong.
One of the “casualties” of losing this worldview is losing the assumption of “I’m a good person”.

The oceans of blood in the "killing fields" of Cambodia did not lessen the enthusiasm of American leftists for communism. They would rather die than admit error in their ideology.
