USGS to Discontinue Streamgages Due to Sequestration: The U.S.Geological Survey (USGS) will discontinue operation of up to 375 streamgages nationwide due to budget cuts as a result of sequestration. Additional streamgages may be affected if partners reduce their funding to support USGS streamgages. The USGS is working to identify which streamgages will be impacted and will post this information as it becomes available. Streamgages are used nationwide to predict and address drought and flood conditions by monitoring water availability. The USGS and over 850 Federal, State, and local agencies cooperatively fund the USGS streamgaging network, which consists of over 8,000 streamgages. When budget fluctuations occur, the network is impacted.
The following stations have been or are about to be discontinued due to the lack of funding. If you have questions about specific stations, please contact the individual identified for each State. If you have questions about the US Geological Survey National Streamflow Information Program in general please contact Mike Norris (603-226-7847; mnorris@usgs.gov) or Robert Mason (703-648-5305; rrmason@usgs.gov).

And where is the money for THAT “work” coming from!
FIRE THEM. We don’t need ‘em.
What “services” is the EPA cutting?
Insane that they continue to use a cut in the increase of funding as an excuse to shut down services that had enough funding under the old budget.
It seems they only go to fix problems or to occasionally perform a calibration.
Much better to kill off the PR functions. The gauges are one of the (few) real valuable services performed by the Fed Gov't (like at least 50% of what the Weather Service does).
I hope someone is taking note of what things the government is eliminating due to the “sequester”. When it turns out that there is little difference we will know the first things to do away with,
Better to kill all of the Potomac River gauges.
Hey 0, how about we identify a few of your czars that can be taken off-line?
The govt morons NEVER touch their pay, pensions and benefits. I bet you could cut 25% of most departments personnel and it wouldn’t effect the average citizen. What a cabel of losers.
Obama maximizing the chaos so he maximize his political capital, at our expense of course.
so he can....
left the can out.
Precisely. They are already installed. No monitoring is required as they report electronically. Regular maintenance is not required.
Once installed, streamguages are essentially a zero cost operation. Thus, virtually NO costs are being saved.
This is a total sham.
pretty sneaky. Just before flood season...
I think a case can be made that to prevent massive property damage and possible loss of life, the states should exercise imminent domain and take over this job themselves.
The Feds seem to think they can stonewall the states, cut off services and punish their residents without anyone pushing back. Well, we might be flyover country but we got people right here who can read a guage. We have State Park rangers who can man the gates of (formerly) Federal Parks. We have NG troops to guard airports and man control towers. In fact, just about every Federal agency has a matching organization at the state level. The Feds need to know that if they're too good to do the work, they can be replaced.
Obama's troops need to know right now that if they shut down a service to the people as a form of punishment, that the States will boot them the H out and replace them immediately.
I seem to recall a disagreement between RR and the Air Traffic Controller's Union, now how did he resolve that?
I wish Nevada would claim all the BLM land as state property.
The so-called sequester amounts to a .02 cents on the dollar decrease in the federal government's scheduled spending increase.
That's it.
It's the same as if you were scheduled to get a $1.00 an hour raise, but got a .98 cents an hour raise instead. You're going to make .98 cents an hour more than you were before your raise kicked in.
Now tell me how that's catastrophic to your finances.
Que?
Budget cuts, furloughs, and reduced capability for United States Geological Survey scientists and engineers.
Fully funded EBT cards for shiftless bums.
