Young New Yorkers would not be able to buy cigarettes until they were 21, up from the current 18, under a proposal advanced Monday by Dr. Thomas A. Farley, the citys health commissioner, and Christine C. Quinn, the City Council speaker.
The proposal, which would give New York the highest smoking age in the country among major cities, is the latest effort in a long campaign to limit smoking that began soon after Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg took office, with bans on smoking in restaurants and bars, and expanding more recently to bans at parks, beaches, plazas and other public places.
The new proposal would make the age for buying cigarettes the same as for buying liquor. It was not immediately clear whether Dr. Farleys proposal would make it illegal for people under 21 to possess cigarettes, as well as to buy them.

What’s the minimum age to purchace a Big Gulp in New York? At what age can you buy table salt in New York?
What time is light’s out for all subjects in the kingdom of New York?
So let me get this straight. A 20 year old soldier who just got off the plane at JFK, after serving a tour of combat duty in Afghanistan could be arrested if he pulled out a pack of Cigarettes while waiting for his Taxi.
This city has as many people in it at my whole state of Ohio does. How they can possibly put up with these obnoxious politician nannies is beyond me. You’d think that somebody, somewhere, somehow would rid themselves of these jerks.
The city wants taxes taxes taxes. This is just a ploy to make smoking ever more “cool” and “forbidden” among the young, which will increase teenage smoking even more. More kids smoking more taxes. If everyone in the country just stopped smoking for a year, states like New York, and California would implode.
Are these nits on the same planet...haven’t they real work to do? New Yorkers, don’t you care any more?
Now for the voting age.
Good thing 19 year olds don’t know how to travel. By subway.
New Jersey says, “Thank You, Mayor.”
Same sh*t, different day
Also, I believe this proposal would be re: sale, not possession.

I really don’t care what happens in NYC. They brought it on themselves be electing a despot.
There ARE some. Unfortunately, the NY GOP is NOT among them. Remember, Bloomburg was allowed the R by the NY GOP in 2001.
Some other notable NY GOP office holders; Rockefeller (Gov), Wilson (Gov), Javits (Sen), Lindsay (NYC Mayor)
I am not a smoker but this is more Bloomberg nanny nonsense.
Are these nits on the same planet...havent they real work to do? New Yorkers, dont you care any more?
I'm sure some New Yorkers do object; most unfortunately, a majority have accepted state serfdom.
Then we can have drive by shootings over it, and calls for even more gun control.
Yeah, that’d be great, especially having Rahm Emanuel telling tobacco dealers after they kill a little girl to “take it somewhere else” and whatnot . . .
That’s almost like saying “I really don’t care what happens in Germany; they brought it upon themselves by electing a despot” back in the 30s . . .
At what age can you vote in NY? At what age are you considered to no longer be a minor? At what age can you serve full active duty in the US Military in NY? At what age can you buy and sell property in NY? Just wondrin’....
