Susan Sarandon: ‘War on Drugs’ Is ‘Completely Racist’ April 22, 2013 By Melanie Hunter
(CNSNews.com) – Actress Susan Sarandon on Wednesday called the war on drugs “completely racist,” arguing that only lower level drug defendants get locked up – “mostly people of color.”
“The war on drugs is ridiculous, because you’re only getting—you’re spending a huge amount of money. It’s completely racist. You’re picking up everybody at the lower level because mandatory minimum drug laws let you trade in to get off, so if you don’t have anyone to trade in, if you’re at the bottom, you’re going to jail," she said.
“If you’re up at the top, you just trade in somebody and then you get off, so the people at the bottom are the ones that are filling up our jails, mostly people of color. And you’re wasting taxpayers’ money, and you’re allowing drug cartels to make money,” she added.
Sarandon advocated for the legalization of marijuana, saying “I would like to see everybody be able to smoke pot.”
Sarandon added that it would produce revenue for states. “If you taxed it, we’ll see what happens in these states that have passed it. You would have a lot of income,” she said.

When poverty is endemic in a modern industrial economy, it is tied to two things. Broken families, and substance abuse.
Add to that a generational welfare mentality and you have a toxic morass that is very difficult to climb out of.

If one accepts Ms Sarandon’s analogy then she has marked herself as one giant hypocrite for surely abortion is racist by her same standard.

This bullshit. If the only ones getting locked-up were the “lower level” scum then there would be nobody out there with guns shaking down and killing people for pennies.
And may I suggest that even if it were legal they would STILL be shaking people down and killing them to get money for their fixes.

The rest of your comments are too funny. I had a Dad who carried over the seeds of racism from his forefathers who were slave owners and he was pretty much the same way (I figured out it was learned behavior later). Funny thing is one of my best friends was black after I got out of high school and I ended up playing guitar with him in an all black band in my twenties. I found out that if I didnt feel tense around them or act different that we got along just fine.
I’d rather have a respectful God fearing Blackman as my next door neighbor than a foul mouthed redneck any day... lol

Drug criminalization obviously hasn't de-infested those neighborhoods - and it has motivated crime by hyperinflating the price of drugs, and by channeling hyperinflated drug profits into criminal hands.

Furthermore, if I knew the authorities were going out of their way to arrest people of my ethnic persuasion for possessing some illegal substance, do you seriously believe I'd mess with that stuff?
