After two weeks in the national spotlight, Sen. Pat Toomey was ready to move on.
Toomey, seeming refreshed Thursday after the deflating defeat of his background-check plan the day before, greeted reporters with a smile as he rode an escalator up from the Capitol's subway platform. But the Pennsylvania Republican did not want to talk much about the fight that had put him at the center of the political and cultural maelstrom on gun laws.
"The Senate has spoken on this," Toomey said. "It's not obvious to me what alternative path forward there is. I gave this my best shot."

This week, I worked with Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) on legislation that would have made it harder for criminals and the dangerously mentally ill to obtain guns while preserving the rights of law-abiding people to do so. The bill did not move forward in the Senate.
This amendment would have helped enhance public safety while still protecting the Second Amendment. I understand the passions on both sides of this issue. I did what I thought was the right thing for our country. I sought out a compromise position that I thought could move the ball forward on an important matter of public safety.
My only regret is that our amendment did not pass. It's not the outcome I hoped for, but the Senate has spoken on the subject, and it's time to move on. We have a lot of other very important issues to deal with such as getting the economy back on track, dealing with the debt ceiling and creating more jobs for Pennsylvanians.
I’m sure many would like to give Toomey their ‘best shot”.
Got the same dribble email this morning.
FU Arlan Toomey. You R toast. Hope we can find a REAL Conservative to primary you in 2016. In the meantime ,I will do all I can to make sure you are NOT re-elected.Anti Toomey bumper stickers R already ordered!
It is time for a real Conservative in PA.
Interesting metaphor.
"It's not obvious to me what alternative path forward there is."
Try this, Senator:
"A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."
It's pretty obvious to me, Pat. How about "leave the Second Amendment alone"?
Now the voters will get their shot.
Here’s hoping they are better shots than Toomey.
Changing the subject by the wimp - can we forget this? I put it under the rug, so let's move on, I'm busy.
Got the same E-mail, my only regret is that Toomey hasn’t resigned yet and let a real conservative take his place. Too much time on the Manchin’s yacht getting brain raped by the libtards.
Toomey’s political career is toast...unless he wants to switch parties. That worked so well for Specter.
You got to hand it to the Democrats...they got Toomey to compromise himself and he’s a one termer. That’s one seat pickup for the Dems in 3 years.
On immigration, they got Rubio to willingly sell out on one of the biggest hot buttons for the Republican base, and they eliminated their biggest threat for the 2016 White House race.
It is remarkable how G-D DUMB so many are on our side...even our brightest up-and-comers.
The problem is, there aren’t enough PA conservatives apparently to elect anyone. Santorum’s PA campaigns were not very conservative on many issues, especially his last one. Toomey was a big disappointment here, but not sure whoever replaces him will do much better. I’m more concerned with states like Texas, Georgia, South Carolina and Arizona sending us mushes than I am with whatever PA or Mass sends us. The Toomeys hurt, but the Grahams and the Cornyns and the McCains DEVASTATE.
Goodbye, Toomey.
You showed your true colors very soon after your election.
:: “I did what I thought was the right thing for our country.” ::
See, Pat, I find a problem with this statement. You should be doing the right thing for our country, yes, but not what YOU THINK. You should be applying the principles and understandings of your constituency; you know “we the people” and all that.
You and your fellow legislators have lost the primary task set before you (read your Oath of Office —with crtitical discernment— for a clue on this concept).
It is sad that these folks, all too often, go to W-DC to implement what THEY think is “right” for America. “We The People” really need to re-establish our right to govern; starting by identifying enemies of the US Constitution, both foreign and domestic.
And, re-educate our representatives in the full meaning of “infringe” when it comes to God* given rights.
I think you captured the essence of this rather well.
Beyond the immediacy of his stupid act is the fact that he has so completely ruined any credibility going forward. What the hell was he thinking?!
All anyone on the right had to do was say, “OK, presupposing that you want to have a sincere discussion (ha-ha) on legislative options let’s talk. The only precondition is that ANYTHING that infringes our constitutional rights are off the table.”
Now he has revealed himself as one who would willingly sacrifice freedom for the illusion of safety. In other words a sheep. We have more than enough of those already.
Owned by a guy from WEST VIRGINIA?
(That's a QUESTION.)
Gee...
To his credit he’s not BLAMING THE NRA for the defeat (i.e., using Democrat talking points), like most RINOs would.
“they got Toomey to compromise himself and hes a one termer”
The same thing is going to happen to Rubio if he doesn’t get off the amnesty train.
Toomey get back on the WVa senator’s yacht for more booze and broads, you fool.
