We Win. They Lose. The 2nd Amendment is Safe.
Red State ^ | 4/17/2013 | Erick Erickson

Posted on 04/18/2013 7:20:41 AM PDT by IbJensen

Today in the Senate, a funny thing happened.

We fought on principle, and we won on principle. You know why?

Because 3 U.S. Senators didn’t listen to the “do something” caucus and the hand-wringers parading as leaders in Washington. Instead, Senators Cruz, Lee and Paul circulated a warning prior to the last recess saying they would (gasp) filibuster any legislation that would undermine our God-given, fundamental right to bear arms. It just so happens that this God-given right is enshrined in the Constitution.

We have a play book, ladies and gentleman: fight and win.

Thankfully these fresh faces in the Senate get it.

You know who else gets it? The Gun Owners of America. From the beginning, GOA was standing up tall to defend the Second Amendment on principle – not in a game of political gamesmanship and endorsements of Democrats. They were crystal clear the whole time and led other groups, some of whom get more attention and prominence in the debate, in their direction.

Heritage Action for America also gets a lot of credit for moral clarity and fearlessness at the very beginning of the debate. Their willingness to stand with Senators Cruz, Lee, and Paul at the very beginning helped tremendously.

Today, in Britain, Lady Thatcher’s devotion to public service and dedication to liberty was celebrated… not that anyone in the Obama administration noticed. The Prime Minister was tenacious and knew how to fight. She would often say “First you win the argument, then you win the vote.” Not particularly difficult to say – but sure seems difficult for most politicians to carry out.

But kudos to Senators Cruz, Lee and Paul for being willing to provide leadership where there has been none.

Now – on to Immigration.

At first I was glad he got pissed- then I began to realize that when narcists get pissed- they also get even because they are NOT gracious losers- the left has proven this for many years- when they lose- they get nasty, vile and vindictive- and hwen a leftist narcisist loses- look out

He was actually shocked that everyoen didn’t agree with him and his bill, then his shock turned to rage- and you coudl see that coming out in him tonight-

He dug his heels in today, and he may just ram through an executive order based on ‘imminent necessity’ just like kkkuomo did in NY-

This bill shoudl have NEVER even gotten to the floor for a vote- the republicans betrayed the American peopel by allowing this unconstitutional bill to even be votred on- the republicans shoudl have REFUSED to even allow it to go to a vote and hsoudl have held presss conferences declarign to hte American peopel that they had our backs in regards to protectign oru constitutional rights, and they shoudl have said “The left is in session right now attemptign to vioalte your second amendment rights, and we will NOT be a party to such treason agaisnt the nation

But of course we all know the right has lost it’s spine and so they agreed to allow this unconstitutional bill to go to a vote- a bill that had NO BUSINESS even beign discussed- The right had a perfect opportunity to put hte left i ntheir place, and they blew it big time and isntead handed the left a victory even though they lost THIS TIME AROUND- because now the left knows they can ram one unconstitutional bill after another through to the floor for a vote without ABNY real opposition, and they know that eventualyl they will falsely shame enough traitorous republicans into votign for their bill

If they follow the schedule, it’s ten minutes until they gather to vote on these two amendments.

Hmm...so gun control is supported by 90% of the public, is it, Barry? Will that be 115% by this morning? 158 bazillion?

I have to laugh when they tell whoppers like that and then accuse the other side of lying. And apparently some of them believe their own propaganda, which is funnier still. I have a great idea - with 90% approval, the Dems should run strictly on gun control in 2014. What could possibly go wrong?

There are two kinds of gun control advocates; The ‘low information’ and the ‘true believer.’

The ‘low information’ gun control advocates don’t really know anything about guns. They just repeat whatever sound bite or pithy factoid they’ve heard lately. They are either scared of guns or simply don’t like them, don’t know why anyone would want to own a real gun, and wish guns would just go away. While they may not necessarily intend for everyone’s guns to be confiscated they would most likely say ‘Well, it’s probably for the best,’ and go along with it.

The ‘true believer’ gun control advocates have one simple goal: To make the private possession of any firearm a felony. Period. They want to confiscate every gun not controlled by the government. Some simply hate guns while others see privately held guns as an ‘impediment’ to some other goal or plan. They will take as many years as necessary to achieve this goal, decades even. They are nothing if not patient. They will never stop. When they grow too old to continue they will pass on the job to the next generation of ‘true believers.’

This bill’s defeat is simply a battle in an ongoing war.

Gun rights advocates must remain forever vigilant.

This is a lie, we already have the NFA and GCA infringing on the 2nd -- to the point they have become 'normalized' in the eyes of the citizenry.

What is the NFA and the GCA?

These were amendments to the bill. There is still S649 to deal with.

The bare bill contains Sect 122 which states:

Subtitle B—Requiring a Background Check for Every Firearm Sale

it shall be unlawful for any person who is not licensed under this chapter to transfer a firearm to any other person who is not licensed under this chapter, unless a licensed importer, licensed manufacturer, or licensed dealer has first taken possession of the firearm for the purpose of complying with subsection (s).

This IS universal background checks.

What is the NFA and the GCA?

The GCA is the Gun Control Act of 1968 and the NFA is the National Firearms Act.

I guess that makes more sense, since the vote failed even with a majority.

But why would they amend a bill to include background checks on private purchases at gun shows and internet sales when it already included even stricter universal requirements?

The amendment they voted for was actually weaker than the bill. I think that there is still a requirement for 60 votes to end debate. If it cannot pass that hurdle, the bill is essentially dead.

I think I get it now :)

By not watering down the bill, its passage is assumed to be doomed. Obama’s reaction certainly presumes a failure to end debate.

Any news on how that vote went down?

“Any news on how that vote went down?”

Those last two amendments passed but they were good ones. Reid still has to get a vote on the main bill but he didn’t say when he would do that.

I read that one of hte last two bills was a democrat’s that pushed for more ‘mental health’ evaluations? If so- that’s not a good hting- it opens up the door to more regulatiosn and restrictions- we already had bills for mental health regulations- but they want to control who can own guns for ANY reason- even if someoen was only briefly on soemthign like anti-anxiety

This is their backdoor entrance into confiscation as we’re seeign in ny,colorado, mich etc
