Explosions rocked a fertilizer plant in West, Texas, Wednesday evening as firefighters were battling a fire, causing multiple injuries, authorities said.
Dani Moore, dispatcher with the Texas Department of Pubic Safety, said she did not know how many were injured or the extent of their injuries.
"The fertilizer plant was on fire. Firefighters were on the scene. There was an explosion ... followed by a second explosion,'' she said.
She said there were multiple damages to structures and vehicles. She said she had no information on the cause of the blasts or fire.
WFAA.com reported at least 10 structures were on fire, including a school which is next door to the plant. An emergency triage center was set up at a high school football field.
The TV station said on its website that a shock wave was felt in parts of North Texas.
The Waco Tribune reported injuries to several people including firefighters.
The fertilizer plant is about 20 miles north of Waco and just off Interstate 35.
KWTX.com reported one of the nearby buildings damaged was a nursing home, and state troopers transported some of the injured to hospitals in patrol cars.
It also said the explosion knocked out electrical power to part of the community.
Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center in Waco, was receiving some of the injured. Answering the phone at the hospital, Karen Jackson said she could provide no information on the number of injured or the extent.

I know about the blast - have been trying to keep up with it via the internet but what is in this video?
Around 60 reported dead, and many injuries.
I would imagine many of the injuries are burn victims, and that’s the worst kind of pain.
Pray PRAY!!!!
Well, it “flared.”
CCTV is reporting the bigger numbers and are using Waco TV feeds. I’ve seen scant a word on Fox (just a minute or two). This is massive and even Drudge just has one line.
Family in a car filming the fire when it suddenly explodes. Girl screams she can hear and to ‘get out of here’ over and over. Complete chaos.
The burning tank explodes. It’s safe to watch. I do hope we get an update. Obviously they made it out safely or we wouldn’t have the video. It’s the daughter’s hearing that is of concern after the horrific blast.
Looks like a nuke hit, almost.
You see the fire from the view of a man and his daughter in his P/U. The fire is already huge, then it seems to get even bigger, and then it blows up. It startled me while I was watching it. The man’s daughter evidently loses her hearing and she is begging him to “get out of here.”
He probably can’t hear her either, judging by the audio.
Prayers for West, TX!!
WHY THE HELL ARE CHEMICAL PLANTS LIKE THIS PERMITTED TO BE BUILT IN OR CLOSE TO A TOWN???????????????????
self ping
It is the other way around, towns go up around the plants. People naturally start to build closer and closer to where they work.
Wow that explosion shocked me.
I wonder how many tons of TNT that explosion ranked as. It was defiantly huge!
As one guy on the Youtube forum remarked Massachusetts ain’t got shit on Texas when it comes to big bangs. Tragically there is probably quite a lot of casualties, my heart goes out to them.
I think next time i do drive thou the town i will stop for food or something there.
Thanks you guys, so much.
My MIL lived through that one...this will stir up frightening memories.
