Emergency crews were responding Wednesday night after a report of a major explosion at a burning fertilizer plant in West north of Waco.
West firefighters were dispatched to the plant earlier in the evening after an earlier fire rekindled.
The explosion was reported at around 7:50 p.m. in a frantic radio call from the scene of the fire at West Fertilizer at 1471 Jerry Mashek Dr. just off Interstate 35.
Numerous injuries were reported and multiple ambulances were requested.
Several buildings were reported destroyed and a nearby nursing home was damaged.

It sounds like an accident but time will tell.
Watching the coverage on the Dallas TV stations now, and I saw two ETMC ambulances from my city of Tyler, TX on the scene there. Bear in mind Tyler is 130 miles from West, TX. They must be calling in ambulances from all over TX.
Now, they just said on Dallas Channel 4 that the EMS director of West, TX says there may be 60 to 70 people dead. So sorry to say.
Just heard from a friend whose wife delivered a baby today at Hillcrest Hospital in Waco (primary major hospital closest to blast site). Their nurse told them it is all hands on deck in the ER, and they’ve been told to anticipate over 100 fatalities.
Yes..something about a fire earlier that flamed back up and then exploded.I am shuddering thinking about Bopal, India. Can you imagine how hard it is to get out of there on i35??
I would be finding me some rabbit trails to leave the area.
Pardon my language, but holy s***! G-d be with those poor people.
There are photos of an apartment complex TWO MILES from the site of the explosion that was devastated.
Unbelieveable.
The hospital in West is right near the explosion site. They will be evacuating that too if not already under way.
I am sure 35 is a nightmare.
The Nursing Home was virtually leveled.
God Help West, Texas. That is horrible news.
Reporting 75-100 homes and businesses completely destroyed.
This is horrible news. The pictures look like a huge bomb went off! Just devastating, especially for that small community
According to google maps, looks like the West Rest Haven nursing home is about 300 yards from the fertilizer plant. Plus a whole neighborhood of homes even closer.
When the big SHTF it will be days if not weeks before you know it. Our Media is so inept, I’m surprised anything is being reported at all about this because it doesn’t involve BO. Why isn’t this Major NEWS?
I’m watching some live local coverage but it is limited (never seen so many flashing lights in my life)
The Town has been demolished, many casualties ... I have A- blood, I’m taking a Road Trip. What else can I do?
This sucks
TT
I have been though there dozens of times, but never stopped to check out West.
Looks like the hospital is a couple hundred yards further from the plant than the nursing home. Still too close.
The response has been incredible though from what I am hearing. Good Texans rushing in from all directions!!
Prayers!!
For the same reason we won't get any Federal aid.
Obama hates Tx.
For real?! They make the best Kolaches in Texas. Remember that is where that 20/20 crew did a hatchet job sitting up a Muslim to walk into a store there and trying to solicit ‘racist’ remarks. News dude saying that folks in Arlington felt it...wow!!
