Steyn on the Iron Lady vs the lazy, snarling deadbeat lefties in the UK.

Think about how strange it would be in the UK today for a mainstream politician to call for the nationalization of businesses or insist on a general strike.

Thatcher made the traditional European left platform in the UK an historical irrelevance.

When some grizzled old communist academic says that he doesn't recognize the Labour Party of today as the one of his youth, he's actually not lying.

She apparently embarrassed them just by her mere existence....therefore they must celebrate her end.

And Labour has admitted that they would never have been able to reform employment laws or privatize utilities because of opposition from their activist base the trade unions. But because the Tory Government had made the changes, Blair, Brown etc had the much easier task to listen to the broader public, including the prosperous, aspirational elements of the working class that had gone Conservative by the late 1980’s that and to not reverse them.

Amazingly, they managed to spell all four words correctly.

OMG! What a fantastic rip!

I love Steyn's writing.

It’s ironic that the supposedly obnoxious Americans today revere Ronald Reagan, even snarling Regressive Leftists like Barack Hussein Obama (mmm mmm mmm), while the “reserved” Brits are foaming at the mouth about the Iron Lady.

So the lefties are singing "Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead". A song from a musical adaptation of one of the works of L. Frank Baum. L. Frank Baum, advocate of women's suffrage and the gold standard. L. Frank Baum, master of irony and author of the phrase "Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!" L. Frank Baum, conservative.

I've had enough exposure to British lefties, including the northern subspecies, to know for certain that the irony is completely lost on them.

I have a feeling that the UK would have ended up like Greece a long time ago were it not for Margaret Thatcher.

A generation on, the Thatcher era seems more and more like a magnificent but temporary interlude in a great nation’s bizarre, remorseless self-dissolution. She was right and they were wrong, and because of that they will never forgive her.

One could substitute "Reagan" for "Thatcher" and still be 100% correct!

The Left never changes it's putrid spots.

Wrong.

It's unclear whether or not we have a Denis Thatcher - that's the problem.

I was listening to NPR today. I recommend it for everyone. It’s always good to know what the enemy’s thoughts are. The subject was the Iron Lady’s passing. One woman on there was so upset over the fact that Margaret Thatcher was given such a nice sendoff by the mainstream press while Hugo Chavez was revielled in the press on his passing. She said it’s an example of the rightward bias of today’s mainstream media. It’s amazing how these lefties love people like Chavez and yet will never live in a Cuba or Venezuala....

One can find a number of political allusions in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz--the gold standard vs. free silver (walking on the yellow brick road in silver shoes), William Jennings Bryan (the cowardly lion) the 1894 march on Washington by "Coxey's Army" (the trek to the Emerald City), etc.

The lefties may be singing Ding-Dong! The Witch is Dead! (Glenn Miller & His Orchestra, 1939). But a more appropriate song for Margaret Thatcher would be Over the Rainbow (Larry Clinton & His Orchestra, 1939).

Great post.

if happy little bluebirds fly beyond the rainbow ... why ... oh why can't I?

RIP Mrs. Thatcher. You have flown over the rainbow on earth and now I pray in the heavenly bodies ... we are better off for knowing you and England's 'green and pleasant land' looked better because YOU were there!

Dear Maggie ... to yourself rest but true ...
