With less than a month to go until a high profile special election to fill a vacant congressional seat in South Carolina, things are heating up. Democratic nominee Elizabeth Colbert Busch, the sister of satirist and Comedy Central host Stephen Colbert, Tuesday released her first ad of the general election campaign. Her Republican opponent, former Gov. Mark Sanford, whose political career was sidetracked back in 2009 thanks to a well-publicized affair, was quick to respond and criticize Colbert Busch, and he also accepted invitations to four debates between now and the May 7 contest. "I'm Elizabeth Colbert Busch, and as a single mom raising three young children, I had to be independent and do what's right for them. Now, I'm going to take that lesson to Congress," says Colbert Bush in the commercial, speaking directly into the camera. "I won't take any special interest pledges or follow any party line. To create jobs in South Carolina, we need a well-educated and skilled workforce and we need to get rid of government waste. The deficit is killing jobs." The Sanford campaign was quick to respond to the Colbert Bush spot, with spokesman Joel Sawyer saying that that it's "fairly ironic that she's now against the deficit, after advocating for the trillion dollar, budget-busting, failed stimulus which raised deficits, and for Obamacare, which many argue is one of the biggest tax increases in American history." The release of the new ad came as the Boeing company announced Tuesday that it's expanding in South Carolina, saying it will invest $1 billion and create 2,000 jobs over the next eight years in the Palmetto State.

Sanford wants 4 debates with Stephen Colbert’s sister. CNN wants to moderate one debate. What’s next? Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart moderating the debate? In the primary, Sanford’s vote totals exceeded Colbert’s votes. In a low key, low turnout race, Sanford wins. However, in a high profile race with lots of media attention, turnout could be higher and give Sanford some problems.
Sanford gave himself problems. Again, the best republicans have to offer?
It will be amusing to see Colbert’s sister pretending to be patriotic and pretending to believe in God and pretending to respect the faith’s of SC voters.
This is who Republican primary voters cast ballots for. There were plenty of other options, yet supposedly conservative values voters from the 1st congressional (R+11) district in South Carolina voted to nominate Mark Sanford. And then they went and voted for him again in the runoff. There is no excuse. People can't keep blaming the party for rotten candidates. At some point the actual voters are to blame - even ones that claim to be traditional conservatives.
Probably better at it than the unscrupulous philanderer the witless Republicans are running for that office.
Well, it is obvious morals no longer matter to most voters so I shouldn’t be surprised.
DC is already a cesspool of moral and ethical reprobates. If we’re to send one, too, I’d rather they have the proven record of cutting government spending rather than a pious rodent who never will cut an ounce of fat. In the ‘70s, two Catholic Priests were elected to Congress (one from Massachusetts, another from Wisconsin), and both were Democrats who voted like Karl Marx (and the one from MA was easily succeeded by Barney Frank).
All Dems run as ‘independents’ LOL!
I’m interested to see how much the national media succeeds in influencing this race.
Hard for the national media to affect a House race, and that frustrates them.

I'm ashamed of my fellow South Carolinians for putting this man up. He doesn't represent South Carolina values. At least I hope he doesn't.
People are left with morals over fiscal conservatism. Mark Sanford, for all his moral transgressions, is a true fiscal conservative. His fiscal conservatism is what won him the primary.
Is a liar always a liar about everything? Probably not. The voters will sort them out here. God will sort them out in the end.
If she takes the conservative line and Sanford has a sex and adultery problem, maybe bothe of them are in the wrong party. An educated electorate would reject them both and ask for a Tea Party candidate.
I’m tired of the whining freepers who would rather see a hollywood backed liberal win than a conservative who cheated on his wife. Grow up people.
You may not have said it but yes freepers have said they’d rather Sanford lose. One lady even told she hopes “everybody votes for Colbert”.
I guess they are all sin free.
“It seems to be the MO of GOP-E types who attempt to badger conservatives to vote for their failed candidates.”
The establishment Republicans in SC hated Sanford’s guts cause he was a conservative.
But you are damn right I will “badger” people who are being fools. They are enabling the enemy, period, end of story.
Pretty sad there isn’t a fiscal conservative who also isn’t a lying cheater. And I think name recognition won him the primary. Republicans have plenty of low information voters, too.
Yeah, in the real world, all that matters is how many expensive toys you take with you to the grave.
Who left his post doing said cheating, and stuck the taxpayers with the bill.
