Obama Overrides Congress to Buy $690 Million Worth of Russian Choppers for Afghan Air Force
Front Page ^ | 4/8/13 | Daniel Greenfield

Apparently America has too many jobs so Obama will be spending taxpayer money to support Russia’s defense industry on behalf of Afghanistan. And he’s doing so over the bipartisan objections of Congress from both the right and left and a ban on buying them written into the NDAA.

The US Department of Defense said Thursday it plans to sidestep a Congressional ban to purchase 30 helicopters from Russian state-owned defense firm Rosoboronexport, despite objections from US lawmakers who allege that the firm has equipped the Syrian government to commit brutal crimes against civilians.

Yes, he did have more flexibility after he was elected, didn't he?

With Russian helicopter sales Afghanistan come Russian military advisors, Russian flight/maintenance training, Russian base support and logistics, Russian communications, etc etc etc

Hey I got an idea! Lets let the Russians sell the Afghan govt helicopters and then our noble new CIA chief John Brennan can set up a secret operation to shuttle STINGERS weapons to the Tolly-bon and al Qaeda to shoot the Russian choppers down!

Then the Russians can do scorched earth on the Afghan countryside to mop up what we don't have the balls or inhumanity to mop up

Brilliant- why no one ever thought of that

The House should just zero out the appropriation. Are they really that scared of the lame duck Won? Or do they know something?

Odumbass doesn’t know that the job of The President is to CARRY OUT the laws, as head administrator, not MAKE them.

As a “constitutional scholar” (huh??) he should know this.

More like not so secret.

Obama seldom gets anything right, but more knowledgeable Freepers have written that Russian helos operate more effectively at higher altitudes typical of the Afghan theater, so that may be why they're doing this.

I don’t think he wants to be president for life. By the time this term ends he will have succeeded in destroying the country and fattening his retirement coffers. He’ll go off and enjoy the fruits of his “labors”.

You just don't get it.

How else is cash strapped Russia going to obtain the working Capitol to support all of the R&D efforts and to hire the the engineering and technical people to modernize their aerospace industrial base and fund their next generation of Russian attack helicopters ?

The Russians currently are producing obsolete helos and they have to get ready to have state of the art helos for the next war and they have lots of unemployed people to take care of. Not to mention they are losing revenue and world power due to their inability to market state of the art aircraft able to compete with the united states. If the contract were let to an American company all the nearly billion dollars would be spent to provide jobs for Americans and would help develop American aerospace technology, and would keep American aerospace companies in business during hard times

Ronald Reagan sidestepped a Congressional ban on sending arms to the Contras in Nicaragua, and look what happened to Adm. John Poindexter and Col. Oliver North.

Why is this being allowed to happen? Where is the outrage from Congress?

Is this a case of "Republican bad, Democrat good?" The hypocricy is outrageous!

Of course they do perform better at etreme altitudes, and they are easier to maintain. Sort of an AR vs AK question.

But the real question is why are we buying them ANYTHING? Afghanistan will not even pretend to be a nation state friendly to us 15 minutes after we leave. Karzia already stands against us. The Taliban is already poised to take power, and is even given legitimacy by us and Karzai.

Does anyone in their right mind think the Afghan army, will use these, to attack the Taliban after we leave?
This and the planned Super Tucano buy is a disgraceful fraud, designed to enrichen contractors and procurement officers. Anything else is an outright lie.
