Growing up, I lived around a lot of Hungarian-Americans. All of the sudden there were some Hungarian kids with unusual accents, in our classrooms and in the neighborhood.

They were kids like us, but in their faces, they seemed old... it was odd.

The things they told us made your hair stand on end! They were brought here and living with their Hungarian relatives who were sometimes 3 and 4 times removed from their own nearst relatives. Their families were incomplete and people were missing from their lives. Most of the kids were quiet and shy. However, I met some of their adult relatives and their stories were horrific.

I had the same experience and my memory of the young girl I befriended matches your description. She was like an elderly woman in a child’s body.

Was that around 1958? IIRC, that's when we also saw an influx of Hungarians - they were escaping from the Soviet block in Europe ............................................................................... FRegards
