University of Rhode Island Police responded to reports of a gunman on the Kingston campus on April 4. Because of a state anti-gun statute, the officers were prohibited from carrying firearms with them when responding to the call.
Upon arriving, university police blocked off Chaffee Hall using only batons and pepper spray. State police--who were armed--then arrived and began a room-by-room search of the building.
The University of Rhode Island tries to exemplify "non violence" by barring weapons on campus--including weapons that would otherwise be carried by campus police officers.

They may be idiots, but at least they have the courage of their convictions, unlike the photo op cops that line up behind an anti-gun politician to demand that the citizens be disarmed while they go out and play GI Joe in their BDUs, body armor, jackboots, and automatic weapons every chance they get.

Next thing you know the Feds will put National Guard troops to patrol an airport for ‘problems and terrorists’, give them their weapons but NO ammunition.
Oh wait — that has already been done. Sorry.
So? They’re allowed to carry whistles and scissors aren’t they? Besides, isn’t it a gun free zone?

The parents of the students, as well as the students, should raise all kinds of holy hell about this! WTF good is it to send an unarmed police officer on a call about an armed suspect? WTF good would it have done if the suspect began shooting students? And does anyone think that the crooks might get the message really quickly that cops on campuses are unarmed? And also knowing that, do parents really want their family members attending such a University?
I guess that moves URI up a couple of notches on every nut job Adam Lanza wannabees hit list.

You guys missed the point. The purpose of RI state's anti-gun statute is to make themselves FEEL GOOD.
Until somebody (bodies) get seriously hurt or killed. But nothing a candlelight vigil and singing songs won't make them all feel 'better' again.

Give some of those cops a break. Many of them are ordered by the politicians to act as their prop whether they like it or not.
