The Defense Department came under fire Thursday for a U.S. Army Reserve presentation that classified Catholics and Evangelical Protestants as extremist religious groups alongside al Qaeda and the Ku Klux Klan.
The presentation detailed a number of extremist threats within the U.S. military, including white supremacist groups, street gangs, and religious sects.
The presentation identified seventeen religious organizations in a slide titled religious extremism. They include al Qaeda, Hamas, the Filipino separatist group Abu Sayyaf, and the Ku Klux Klan, which the slide identifies as a Christian organization.
Religious extremism is not limited to any single religion, ethnic group, or region of the world, the slide explains, in language that closely resembles the text of a Wikipedia page on extremism.

They are “poking the bear” in hopes someone in utter frustration will do something stupid. Then they will say, see we were right and begin the next round of gun grabbing.
Note there is no more Al-Qaeda on list.
Probably on ‘Allied organizations’ chapter now.
From the SPLC page:
Help Us Fight Harmful Propaganda About LGBT People in Our Schools
The Establishment Clause of the U.S. Constitution was enacted in order to prevent this country becoming a theocracy, as were most countries of Europe at the time, where Kings reigned by the grace of God. The Founding Fathers, in whose memories of the vicious religious wars of scant generations past were still a powerful and terrible memory, created the Establishment Clause to forestall just such terrible religious inspired strife in this country.
First they attacked our 2nd amendment rights...now the first....didn’t see this coming. ////sarc
See, they are good for something.

I for one appreciate the government’s candor in this matter; practicing Catholics have no business supporting the government or its policies.
Here in NJ the state has successfully gutted our Catholic education and healthcare system.
The point was simply that extremists can exist in ANY group, which is a true statement.
Don't think there are extremist evangelicals? obviously you haven't been watching the news about that church that pickets funerals.
My guess is that someone tasked with a presentation simply accepted this at face value.
But it could come from the top down. Obama would agree with the demonization of Catholics, etc. But he might be displeased by the labeling of Mohammedan groups as extremists.
Holy f****n s**t.
Turns out I'm a religious extremist.
After reading “conducting Internet research” and before getting to the end of your post, I thought: Bet it was the SPLC.
Sure enough.
Given the kind of people in the highest ranks these days, I would say Christians are very much a threat to what they represent.
You hear Southern Poverty Law Center and think it’s a nice conservative group concerned about poverty in the south. It is nothing more than a bunch of self-righteous liberals out to destroy America. You should check out their website.
These groups of their idea of extremists:
Tony Perkins
Family Research Council
The Family Research Council (FRC) bills itself as the leading voice for the family in our nations halls of power, but its real specialty is defaming gays and lesbians.
American Family Association
The American Family Association (AFA) says it promotes “traditional moral values” in media. A large part of that work involves “combating the homosexual agenda” through various means, including publicizing companies that have pro-gay policies and organizing boycotts against them.
Hutteree? Aren’t they kinda like the Amish?
Correcting the Headline:
Obama Defense Department classifies Catholics, evangelicals as extremists
That’s what the headline SHOULD be.
Obviously YOU haven't been watching thread after thread on Free Republic which shows that Westboro Baptist Church is NOT a church, rather it is a protest group, funded by the DNC, with ties to Al Gore.
And as a point of fact you can even find extremism in the KKK. Who would have suspected that? /s
What are the NOI, NBP, MBH and those groups classified as? Freedom Fighters for the DHS???????????? They like to castigate caucasion conservative groups.
