How North Korea Could Destroy The United States
Investor's Business Daily ^ | April 5, 2013 | IBD EDITORIALS

National Security: The administration moves an advanced missile defense system to Guam because it knows a single low-yield nuke detonated at high altitude could send America back in time a hundred years.

The announcement Wednesday by the Defense Department that it would soon deploy the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense System (THAAD), a missile defense system inherited from the Bush administration, to Guam underscores the seriousness of the threat from North Korea, whose actions, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel rightly said, "present a real and clear danger."

This move comes after the Obama administration reversed its previous scuttling of Bush administration plans to increase our ground-based interceptor force in Alaska and the deployment of two destroyers equipped with Aegis missile defense systems, the Decatur and the John McCain, to the region.

Some observers dismissed it as familiar bluster when North Korea's 28-year-old raging runt, Kim Jong-un, signed an order for North Korea's strategic rocket forces to be on standby to fire at U.S. targets in front of a map that included Austin, Texas, as a target.

But other observers are concerned that a specific target may not be what the possibly imploding North Korean regime may have in mind.

The three-stage missile North Korea launched last December that also orbited a "package," which experts say could be a test to orbit a nuclear weapon that then would be de-orbited on command anywhere over the U.S. and exploded at a high altitude, releasing an electromagnetic pulse (EMP). That would fry electronic circuitry and the nation's power grid.

Fine. Turn off your house power, cut up all your credit/debut cards, and throw out all your electronics. Then get back to normal with only the vacuum tubes and core memory you have and can find.

Like I said as long as we immediately level the playing field by launching our own. The question is do we have a leader with the cajones? If I were CiC and we were emp’ed on a continental level I’d do it in a heartbeat. Then we only have to worry about Mexico but without power to industry they have no reason to swarm north anymore other than border raids.

Besides I think only Russia or the ChiComs have the ability to do it on a global scale. One high altitude emp of low yield effect much.

The real issue here is the assymetrical threat. NK is a rogue nation with wmd, supporting Iran, Syria and terrorism, and now directly threatening our homeland.
Yet we do nothing and all the brave talk about what we can do to NK apparently is not true. At this point, the NK regime should be eliminated, messy as it might be.
Imagine the NK threat 20 years from now with ICBM’s and hundreds of nukes.

As an electrical engineer, EMP is an important consideration.

As an ex-military member, a large (nuclear based) EMP pulse would cause significant damage to our power grid and nonmilitary graded equipment, but is recoverable and would not take that long to recover key components (6 months). Doomsayers aside. NPK has no followup strike capability.

Fortunately, the NPK doesn't have that level of nuke capability. They have only demonstrated a low yield nuke. Additionally they have not demonstrated they have the miniaturization capability necessary to launch a ICBM based nuke.

If they managed to do this and actually followed through, our response would be overwhelming. North Korea would cease to exist. The current regime would be destroyed and they know it. They exist to preserve their regime. The leadership is not ideologues, they are parasites on the Korean people and the world.

Kim and his generals are not suicidal....They want something, more free food aid etc.

Imagine the disruption in big cities if only 25% of the infrastructure stopped working. Do you want to be near one of those cities when that happens?

What would such a scenario do for our ability to project a military presence around the world?

Imagine Chicago, the entire city, under boil water orders. With 25% of their big step down transformers blown. And those transformers all ‘Made in China’. Even if you put the order in right then it would be months before they got power restored.

I know people who lost power after Katrina. Their power went out on August 29, 2005. Their power didn’t come back on until the week before Christmas. The holdup for them was shortage of transformers. They were country people with a well, gardens and a food pantry. And an MRE distribution center in town. Imagine Chicago after that sort of thing.

Never fear Hagel is on the job.........................ummm, time to build a cellar

I just saw Hagel mumbling and grasping for words. That guy is a joke.

Meanwhile, the purge of our good generals and admirals goes on..............

Remember how the Democrats politicians and scientists opposed President Reagon’s SDI calling it “Star Wars” and demogoging it far and wide? It was successful and has been refined over and over. The defense system works.

What would the country look like after 6m it takes to recover key components of the grid?

Do you have clean water and food set aside for the engineers that would be responsible for building that stuff out?

It was dicey after 6w in rural MS without power. Imagine a big city.

“If anything, little Kim can attack the US and create the solidarity that we had right after 9/11.”

My concern is that may be exactly what Obozo intends - and he is egging little Kim on by increasing our military action in the neighborhood. My daughter compared it to a little boy getting right in another boys face - “I’m not touching you - I’m not touching you” until the other kid reacts, then saying he hit first while beating the ***p out of him. And to think they gave Zero the Peace Prize. Idiots all.

I no longer want to be in “solidarity” with about 60% of so called “Americans”.

Who would we launch against? The norks?

Would they notice?

If we EMP’d the norks we’d also cause the South Koreans a lot of pain.

If we nuked them South Korea and Japan would get fallout as well. Are we willing to do that?

Meanwhile, every big city burns to the ground. And with them go a lot of the tech talent necessary to stage any sort of recovery. And that’s assuming the Chinese sell us the equipment we’d need to begin with.

US Army Signal Corps article on shielding equipment against EMP.

Note, to get an EMP that would affect the whole US, the article estimates the enemy would need to detonate something in the 1-10 megaton range at an altitude of 250 to 300 miles.

Just where do you plan on getting the electricity to run all of your electrical devices that managed to survive?

Get the book. Just do it. It’s fiction in more than a lot of ways. What is NOT fiction is the social reaction to no clean water or food after about 3 days.

The technological aspects of recovery would be the easy ones. Recovering infrastructure destroyed in social unrest would be dicier. Building that out again when most of your key people had expired from unsanitary conditions or lack of food would be impossible.

Which is roughly the altitude of the satellite the norks launched in Dec ‘12.

They could put something in orbit to do the trick and there’s little we could do about it before hand.

Not trying to downplay the threats, but a ‘blacked out’ U.S. would create a ‘blacked out’ world. A world grinding to a halt would bring China and Russia to a halt. Then where is the fat little Korean going to get his food? He may not have thought this all through, but I’m sure his Chinese puppet masters have.

“You didn’t hear much from us. Because most of us were without power for 6 weeks or longer. That includes cell phone coverage where I was as well.”

And yet you made it...

“How, exactly, do you propose to keep 300 million people provided with clean water, or even clean food in any sort of timely manner.”

Only the leaches in the big city need to be “provided” with stuff, and they would have a tough time. Most of the RED counties in this country can take care of themselves.

Careful, you’re really going to tick off the hordes of FR “WE’RE DOOMED!!” lunatics that are already planning on mass death of nearly everyone but themselves.
