The Cornus Mas, aka Cornelian Cherry Dogwood is just starting to break bud, here in PA. These trees are rare as hens' teeth. If you ever see one for sale, BUY IT!

Buds should be set on both Cornus Florida (American Dogwood) and Cornus Kousa (Chinese/Korean Dogwood) by now. If there aren't buds, that isn't a good omen. Florida blooms in spring; Kousa blooms in early-to-mid summer.

Do you fertilize your lawn heavily w/ nitrogen around/near the tree? 3 numbers in a fertilizer, such 10-5-3. First is nitrogen for leaf growth; second is phosphorous for flowers/roots; third is potash for stem strength/disease resistance.

Too much lawn fertilizer leeching into tree roots will stymie flower buds and promote leaf growth.

Use your fingernail and lightly scratch stems near buds, ¼" or so, to see if the branches have green wood underneath the bark.

Green = good; brown = bad.

You might have a Cornus Kousa, Chinese/Korean Dogwood, which leafs-out first, and then blooms in early-to-mid-summer, so the flower buds follow leaf growth.

The Cornus Florida, American Dogwood, blooms in spring, and then leafs-out, so the flower buds are large and obvious, right now.

Do you remember what month the tree usually bloomed, in past years?

My bad, I just went and looked and there are buds. But it's a very old tree, almost 40' tall. What I hang my lighted ornaments on at Christmas.
