Large swaths of the Arctic tundra will be warm enough to support lush vegetation and trees by 2050, suggests a new study.
Higher temperatures will lessen snow cover, according to the study, which is detailed in the March 31 issue of the journal Nature Climate Change. That, in turn, will decrease the sunlight reflected back into the atmosphere and increase warming. About half the areas will see vegetation change, and areas currently populated by shrubs may find woody trees taking their place.
"Substitute the snowy surface with the darker surface of a coniferous tree, and the darker surface stores more heat," said study co-author Pieter Beck, a vegetative ecologist at the Woods Hole Research Center in Massachusetts. "It's going to exacerbate warming."

The Arctic climate affects the world: Changes in sea ice affect ocean circulation, which, in turn, affects atmospheric circulation that then impacts the globe, said Bruce Forbes, a geographer at the Arctic Center at the University of Lapland in Finland, who was not involved in the study.

The vast boreal forests bordering the tundra are already lush and green. If they were to advance northward it would be a beneficial development for the environment as a whole. Too bad it is highly unlikely to happen. This ridiculous screed is, as usual, based on a “computer” model, custom made to deliver the desired outcome. It is not based on any data at all.
Come 2050, the heat mongers will move the date up to 2080, ad infinitum.
I was kind of under the impression that the tundra was made up of tons of dead plant matter (kind of like a frozen bog). If it is bad and unprecedented, then how did all of that plant matter get there in the first place?
The heck with the southern hemisphere. I visit Mt. Shasta here in California a lot, almost annually. The snowpack is growing. Mt. Shasta glaciers are growing in California. Two Mt. Shasta glaciers have doubled in size since 1950 (Hotlum and Wintun). Glaciers are also growing in Alaska and Washington state. Those evil lib global warmer liars conveniently ignore the big differences happening in our own back yards.

That is correct. More likely the increase in open water (caused by ocean warmth, not air warmth) will result in increased snowfall which will not melt but instead push the forests further south.

Southern Hemisphere Sea Ice Anomaly: currently .919 million sq. km above normal.
Since .919 > .435, we are indeed above normal. I believe that the red trace on the chart you cited indicates the same point.
Don't know about now, but way back when I was selling them instrumentation, these guys would do or say anything for grant money.
