A Minnesota mom six months pregnant getting ready to head home from a trip to New York with her 6-year-old daughter was arrested last week for an unloaded handgun she had in the luggage she was attempting to check.
According to WDAY, Beth Arneson Ferrizzi had no trouble transporting the gun from her departure city — Fargo, North Dakota — as she called Delta to make sure she was following the correct protocol. But she encountered problems as she tried to return home out of La Guardia International Airport, after a trip meeting her husband while he was on leave from Honduras where he is stationed for a year as master sergeant serving in the Air Force.
“They said that the firearm had to unloaded and in a hard-sided, locked case,” Ferrizzi said of Delta’s instructions. “The ammunition had to be stored separated. Not separate from the gun but in either it’s original packaging or some sort of a container that kept the bullets from being in contact with each other.”

And what exactly do you think that is? Is it too much for you to believe that the progressive government of New York City would actually oppress an innocent pregnant woman whose husband is serving his country overseas? I think that this shows the absolute evil of these people—it’s their essense.
It’s time to offer gun storage facilities in foreign airports like LaGuardia.
He is carrying his service pistol, because in New York City, he can carry it concealed, so he figures he can carry it anywhere(it would be legal for the policeman to carry it in North Dakota).
He drives out in the country and spots some men at a drilling rig. They are pouring bags of a substance labled “fracking sand” into a hopper. He immediately draws his pistol, and orders the men to the ground, because he knows that “fracking” is bad and not legal. Thousands of dollars worth of damage is done to the machinery through inaction while the men at the construction site wait for two hours for the county sheriff to get there.
When he does, the NYC policeman is arrested.

I was going through my ammo boxes and discovered a couple of bricks of 22LR ammo that I didn't know I had. So that's where they came from!

Sounds to me like she made a good-faith effort to comply.
Maybe she can register a complaint against Delta, or the agent who misinformed her.

It is a known concern with tubular magazines. Tip of the bullet of one round is positioned right over the primer of the next round. Vibration from the shot may cause detonation of the round in the magazine. There is special ammo that is less likely to ignite primer of the round in front; it is discussed here.
Rimfire ammo is also somewhat a concern because there is a lot of primer compressed into the rim of the cartridge. It still takes a serious impact, enough to punch the brass in, to detonate the primer. But the same can occur if a round is struck with a hammer, or otherwise massively deformed. It won't be a serious danger outside of the barrel, but you don't want to experience that anyway. Fire is also possible.
Most new centerfire rounds are shipped in plastic or foam holders. But remanufactured rounds are shipped without them, in bulk, thrown randomly into cardboard boxes. Bulk rimfire, even new, is often poured into boxes and shipped like that. Only higher value rounds are sold in plastic.
In general, it should be pretty safe to transport rounds of all kinds just in a bag. However if they are not controlled then something hard and heavy can hit the primer. Boxes and inserts do not prevent that, but at least you know where the ammo is. If rounds are just somewhere in a bag then you cannot be sure. Either way, the chance of accidental ignition is very low.
I’ve heard about this happening before. What I didn’t know, and learned from the article, is that the US Air Force is doing something in Honduras. That’s something I’d like to know more about.

The fear is that the hard metal cases banging against the primers will cause a detonation. Understandable. This is also the reason that bullets used in tubular magazines have blunt tips rather than the sharp points of those used in detachable magazines. Luggage handling is NOT gentle. Severe jolts are the norm.
Not just "in the airplane". If you've ever watched the luggage handling process, there are severe jolts from the time it leaves your hands until the time you pick it back up. Luggage handling is NOT gentle.
NYC is much more restrictive than than the rest of the state. Even with a carry permit issued from upstate NY, being caught with a handgun in NYC is bad juju.

Airports should be like Washington DC. Or at least, since Airports are part of the interstate transportation system, the federal government should be able to make common federal law for them.
After all, the TSA is federal. A city can’t tell the airport not to screen passengers.
What I find fascinating is that this is clearly a focus of NYCity. They aren’t looking for guns coming in, they are looking for them leaving, when they can arrest the people for staying in their city with them.
If they were really just trying to keep guns out, they would inspect on arrival, and tell the people that they weren’t allowed to stay in NYC with the gun.
This would be like having a wild west tavern in the old days, but instead of checking the guns at the door, you let poeple bring them in, and then checked when they left, and arrested them if you found they had been in the tavern with a gun.
