Jay Leno has officially announced his retirement from NBC's "Tonight Show."
As expected, "Late Night" host Jimmy Fallon will succeed Leno in the spring of 2014 when "Tonight" moves back to New York, to 30 Rock -- 42 years after Johnny Carson took the show to Burbank.
With Fallon, 38, NBC hopes to capture the younger viewers and compete with ABC's Jimmy Kimmel, who moved to an 11:35 timeslot in January.
"Congratulations, Jimmy. I hope you're as lucky as me and hold on to the job until you're the old guy," Leno said in a statement. "If you need me, I'll be at the garage."

NBC’s not made a smart move with the Tonight Show (at least) since it engineered the idiotic Conan announcement. Since then they’ve tried to arrest the ratings slide brought on by Conan, then paid him off to go away when he refused to accept a new, earlier Leno show on before him, *then* brought back Leno, *then* announced this ridiculous idea. All the while the previous third-place (behind Leno and Koppel) late night champ Letterman.
Anyway it's going to be very tough for me to make the transition from not watching Jay to not watching Jimmy. I don't know how I'll survive.
You might be exaggerating; after all, with a root canal you could get laughing gas...hey! That might be a way to endure a Fallon routine!
“I stopped watching the day Carson retired.”
I occasionally watch Carson clips on Youtube. Just classic, today’s shows don’t hold a candle.
He beats Fallon among young viewers. I haven’t watched these guys for years, but NBC is a struggling network, and getting rid of it’s most profitable show seems stupid.
Frankly, Craig Ferguson is the best of all of the late night talk show hosts.

Yup. Another one of those is the Carol Burnett Show - SNL (for instance) can't come close.
Be better than anything Leno ever did.....
hahaha. just follow meeee....
I guess I will be watching something other than Fallon. I Can’t stand him or his band.
Interesting to see if NBC ‘muzzled’ Leno now that it is ‘official’ or will he keep taking potshots at them until they tell him to take ‘Terminal Paid Leave’?
Awesome!, now Leno can do more episodes of Jay Leno’s Garage on youtube!
I love Leno’s Garage!
“But will it do a burnout?”
Fallon strikes me as a nice guy. About as funny as a toothache, though.
If Fallon continues to do the childish stuff he now does when he takes over for Leno, I won’t be watching.
I don’t think Leno is funny. We sometimes watch because my husband likes the show but I rarely crack a smile at Leno’s jokes.
Putting Leno there might've been a joke, but no bigger than the joke "Meet the Press" got anyway. And I think after a year or so, Leno would've fit in as well as any of those other talking heads (though not quite Russert, who seemed to be tougher and more fair-minded to either side).
Hmmm. I see to recall deja vu from Jay Leno "leaving":
"I'll be 59 when [the switch occurs], that's five years from now. There's really only one person who could have done this into his 60s, and that was Johnny Carson; I think it's fair to say I'm no Johnny Carson. And I don't want to see all the fighting. You hold it and hand it off to the next person. Conan, it's all yours! See you in five years, buddy!"
There are plenty of Carson clips on YouTube, and they are very popular. Lots of views, lots of recent comments, many from young fans who hate current television.
It is strange to watch those clips now. They are entertaining, and I no longer associate television with being entertained. I associate television with snarky leftist jerks.
