It is a given among liberal and progressive Jews that gun ownership among the general population is a bad thing. The ideal is near-universal disarmament with only a handful of individual exceptions and, of course, the police.
The majority of Americans have the opposite view. They believe that gun ownership is a fundamental American right, and that the more law-abiding Americans who own guns, the safer the society. This view is so widely held — even among many Democrats — that few Democratic politicians take anti-gun positions.
Like the great majority of American Jews I grew up in a home with no guns, no hunting, no target shooting or any other use of guns. Moreover, no one I knew had a gun or even knew how to use one. Diaspora Jewish culture is almost pacifist. And the general Jewish view is that non-Jews play with guns, not us Jews. A home with guns is as foreign to a Jewish liberal as gefilte fish is to a Mississippi Baptist.
Over the course of my lifetime I have come to side with the majority of Americans. I would hope that Jews are open to rethinking what has become, like most liberal beliefs, an essentially religious position.
I support gun ownership for two reasons — one American and the other Jewish.
First, I have come to admire the American value of the armed citizen. It is part of the great American value of independence and self-reliance. If I am armed, I can better protect myself, my loved ones and my neighbors.

It doesn’t take hate or disrespect to kill someone who is ordered to kill you. You can admire and respect your enemy, just make sure that your desire to live is stronger than his or hers.
No, it doesn’t take the latest ammunition or even better class of weapon to kill an enemy. A single sixteen or twenty penny nail that has been driven through a 1/4 in piece of wood and slammed into his temple will do the job in just a few minutes. Thump him on the back of his head with a one pound rock and smother him with a plastic bag will guarantee you a corpse in four minutes. A wooden pencil jammed into the brain through his eye socket will do the trick. These are all things an old woman or a small, weakened man are capable of as long as they have the will to win.

I think you misread our conversation.
My point is that the Second Amendment is necessary because the left in America is just hateful and immoral enough to try to kill the right wing.
I agree with you that mob behavior can be atrocious and deadly, but we’re getting far away from my initial argument that American liberals haven’t the martial skills, training or fortitude to take on the warrior class. This is why the liberal fascists are trying to recruit Muslim killers to take on conservatives and patriots; the liberals are incapable of doing the job themselves, and they know it.
If you think a mob of purse-swinging, rock-throwing leftists can overpower people armed with pistols and rifles, I suggest you look up the ‘92 Rodney King LA riots to see who won after the national guard moved in.
The Second Amendment is NOT necessary because we are no longer the country that America once was. It is just words on paper. The will to win is what’s necessary now. When the Dims take over our government and they will, they will demolish the BoR and the entire U.S. Constitution. That’s when the shooting will start and that’s when whomever has the stronger will to win shall come out on top.
Our Courts and justice system folded many years ago. Our legislatures were corrupted decades ago. Our financial system was corrupted a century ago yet we became the strongest nation on this earth. Now we are paying for those days as the worlds strongest corrupt power broker. The globalists want slaves and many are willing to become slaves. Only a very few of us will resist them.

Your stereotype of the left needs updating.
I was in the service with a large number of leftists, they can certainly be trained to perform military tasks. They are not all limp wristed failures. I was in when we processed homosexuals out of the service, even they weren’t limp wristed failures. Obama will be able to create an effective SS type service if he is allowed.
This mob will be in uniform, driving armored vehicles, using drones to track your movement and will be more likely to nab you while you are buying groceries, snipe you while you cut wood or burn you to death in your own house while they sit in their armored vehicle than give you a chance to shoot it out.
I have worked with arab muslims in the military. Now there is a group of limp wristed failures.
