CHICAGO Proposed legislation would make it illegal in Illinois for dogs to get behind the wheel of a car. Dogs in the driver's seat on their owners' laps is a dangerous but common habit, said state Rep. Dan Burke (D-Chicago), co-sponsor of the bill. "Because I travel, I can't help but observe the number of people with dogs on their laps," he said. "It is a public safety concern. If a driver is distracted, certainly it would be a risk to other motorists on the road." Under the proposed law, getting caught with a pet in the driver's seat would carry a $25 fine, though a motorist couldn't get pulled over unless committing another driving violation. For now, however, it seems lap dogs will have their day. Though it cleared a transportation committee, the legislation faces overwhelming opposition as it heads to the House floor, said bill co-sponsor, Rep. Dan Beiser (D-Alton)...

Back at ya cuz!
You mut have cloned my beloved, deceased, dog, Brother, who was half Weimaraner and half Chocolate Lab. He looked exactly like yours, right down to the white spot on his chest.
Considering the number of old ladies (and some old men) I see going down the road with a dog in their lap, this is a good law.
Its not like cops notice your GSD is driving the car! This bill is much ado about nothing.
I know and to be on the safe side of 50%, yeah.
However, I have one friend who was sitting in the back seat wearing her seat belt. The car was hit by a speeder running a red light and the car slammed into 6 inch diameter tree on her side of the car with such force it killed her instantly.
A baby I used to babysit was strapped into his car seat as it had been placed in the front seat, before airbags, and the car got side-slammed by a semi. He also died instantly. So, it does happen.
Sadly a seat belt is not a 100% guarantee that life will continue.
Nice chatting with you cuz!
But, is it ok if the dog is texting?
I love that.
The only problem is he likes to drive with his head out the window...
I dunno...he looks very focused.
And, unlike many S. Florida drivers, he can see over the steering wheel.
And when they come for those no one will be able to stop them, because all the pets who were smart enough to drive will already be gone.
“But it’s still perfectly ok for cats to drive. “
Makes sense to me.
“I am looking into the leash attachments that hook up to the seat belts for them.”
That’s what are dog uses. Quit looking into and just buy one! I used to think the helmet laws for kids were dumb. “Why when I was a kid we....” Until it saved my son from who knows what.
Same goes for our dog and his “seat belt”.
And I’m not sure why they need a new law - it would seem there are enough laws that would cover it already. And it REALLY bothers me when somebody has a large dog that is hanging out the window blocking their view left and their sideview mirror.
This is funny. I live in Illinois, and years ago when much younger, I lived in Chicago on the north side. I had a German Shepherd at the time, and I owned an old U.S. Post Office jeep, which has a platform for the mail where the driver’s side is, and the steering wheel on the right where the passenger seat normally is, just like cars in the U.K. This was so U.S. post office workers could pull up to mailboxes along the roadways.
So, when I would drive in the City with my dog, she was on the driver’s side sitting on the platform, and I was on the passenger side, behind the steering wheel, driving. Bottom line, to the casual observer my dog was driving the car. People would do a double take all the time. I had a few people take pictures of my dog supposedly driving. Would crack me up. Miss that old jeep and my dog from my youth. Although if I had them both today, my dog and I would be arrested.
Tounces!
A new law preventing Free Republic FReepers from posting was just enacted.
And, I'm not too sure that wouldn't happen...
Just sayin'...
LOL!! That had to be funny to see the two of you driving down the street. Thanks for sharing.
I used to ride the bus downtown where I worked. Riding the bus gave me a good view of what people did in their cars.
I was surprised at the number of men picking their noses.
A dog would not do that!
Arf, Arf...
I guess this guy needs some kind of record to show he is a loyal member of the stupid party. Ain’t no common sense there; but no surprise of waste of time and taxpayer money.
Hey — some people’s pets drive better than they do
