City Commissioner James Henry Brooks Sr. has been charged with influencing a witness and obstructing the investigation of the fatal shooting of a baby and wounding of his mother March 21.
Brooks, also charged with racketeering in unrelated cases in Camden County, was booked into the Glynn County jail.
He was at the Glynn County Courthouse Monday when the mother of murder defendant De'Marquise Elkins left the courthouse after her son's initial court appearance. As Karimah Elkins and another woman walked from the courthouse, a county police investigator tried to speak with her. Brooks stepped between them and prevented the officer from speaking with the mother, officials said.
A bail of $1,256 has been set on the obstruction charge, but there is no bail on the charge of influencing witnesses, authorities said.
