Really? It has been my experience that it the moronic “ their my babies” owners of little dogs that let them go every where off leash. And statistically you are at greater risk of being bit by a little dog over compensating for it’s size than by a big dog! Ask any vet. And what I have seen at dog parks is that 90% of fights are started by little yappers not big dogs!

By the way, the breed of the dogs involved wasn’t mentioned in this story.

I have a 60# Australian cattledog that has gone camping with us in Grand Teton NP and visited Yellowstone NP. She has to have her ball-chasing time so that is off-leash. However, I always managed to find a place well away from other dogs and people for the exercise time so as not to give cause for notifying authorities about this rules violation. In camp and at various sites (i.e. Old Faithful), we held to the NPS rules as regards the leash.
Given the SanFran location, I’d say the rangers there are a little more strict and unyielding.

I don’t have a problem with that at all. Our recent/current dogs are/were all well over 60 pounds, and for their safety, when we are off of our property we keep them on leash except when my husband takes them out into deep woods, when he has a training collar that is used for hunting dogs. It has what we call “the con”, a device which can send an audible signal or a pulse (I’ve tried it on myself to determine the strength). Our biggest concern in the woods is that they would try to chase deer and end up miles away. Well, that and ticks.
