North Dakota on Tuesday adopted the most restrictive abortion law in the United States, as the governor signed a bill that bans the procedure in most cases once a fetal heartbeat can be detected, as early as six weeks.
Supporters of abortion rights said they would challenge the measure in court.
Governor Jack Dalrymple on Tuesday also signed a bill that bans abortions based solely on genetic abnormalities, the first state ban of its kind, or based on the gender of the fetus.
North Dakota is the latest state to pass measures to restrict abortions. Arkansas lawmakers earlier in March approved a ban on most abortions after 12 weeks of pregnancy that could take effect in August if it survives expected legal challenges.
Several states ban most abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy.
Dalrymple, a Republican in a state with a Republican-controlled legislature, said the constitutionality of North Dakota's effective ban at six weeks into pregnancy was an open question. He said lawmakers should appropriate money to a litigation fund for the state attorney general to defend against any possible challenges to the law.
The "heartbeat" bill provides exceptions if an abortion would prevent the death or irreversible impairment of a pregnant woman, but provides no exception for rape. It sets up a direct challenge to the Supreme Court's decision in Roe v. Wade that legalized abortion in 1973.

CHALLENGE PLANNED
The Center for Reproductive Rights said it plans to file a legal challenge to the six-week ban before it takes effect on August 1 on behalf of North Dakota's only clinic that provides abortions, the Red River Women's Clinic in Fargo.

If people really thought about abortion — saw a film of the actual procedure, and the fetus from the womb in all its human form — very few would favor it. I really encourage states to pass informed consent laws — ultrasound photos, beating heart, procedure films — so people truly understand what is involved. Abortion is about the most barbaric thing in so-called civilized nations, and for me demonstrates just how cold many people are and how little human life is valued. When I hear about Nanny Bloomie’s purported concern for human life in proposing gun bans I can’t even laugh he’s such a loathsome hypocrite.
The evil one and his partner (president of Planned Parenthood) are unhappy!
This too will be overturned by those old liberal supremes.
States han NO rights.
They federal gub mint is your new god.
Notice the irony that the same despicable people who want to take away our guns “for the children”, have no problem with whacking inconvenient children...
Just try ans show the full process of getting those packaged meats into the display case and most of these LIVs would become vegetarian. Since we became a industrialized society people seem to have no concept of how food is produced.
DITTO!!!
I thought I heard of collective leftard screech rising above this nation earlier today.
Yeah, who knew that “blobs of tissue” had hearts?
Funny how the tree-huggin’ PETA pinko loons support abortion. That’s how every liberal nut job I know views it. You’d be tied to a giant oak tree and set on fire if you ever tried to abort a poor, cute, and cuddly doggy fetus.
North Dakota, keep praying. Satan has this world in the palm of his hand and his minions in his U.S. courts are doing his bidding.
The Governor should’t be wondering about the Constitutionality of the new law. He shouldn’t sign any bill that he thinks violates the Constitution of the United States or of North Dakota.
This idea and attitude that the Executive and Legislative branches should just pass stuff and then let the Courts determine if it is Constitutional is one of the reasons government has grown so large. And in ceding their coequal status as Constitutional guardians, the Legislative and Executive branches have aided and abetted the Constitutionally unsound practice and policy of judicial supremacy.
Otherwise he seems like a pretty good governor.
Whatever happened to conception!?
Yes, indeed. When a human male sperm fertilizes the female egg a human being is conceived. It is not a fetus, blob of tissue or any other such nonsense. It is a human being and thus entitled to life! Without life there is no liberty or pursuit of happiness! How can something that fundamental be so lost on so many people? Boggles my mind.
I like that too, and the “Abortion stops a beating heart” billboards. Not too many ways to argue against that.
It’s amazing how early a heartbeat can be picked up.
I wonder what percentage of pro-abortionists would advocate killing an unborn baby seconds before birth? Wait ... maybe I'd rather not know that number.
It is actually quite clear if you look at their true aims versus their stated ones. They say they are against the killing of animals but that is actually just a ruse to try and empower themselves and harm the citizens of this country. Eseentially they are aligned with evil but they want to use a traditional american value (conservation) to trick us(americans in general, not FReepers). When viewed through their true evil aims, eco-nut support of abortion makes perfect sense.
There is only one clinic in the state, here in Fargo, but they kill a classroom's worth of kids every week.
For a state with a big land area, but a small population, it is a big deal.
