A 15-year-old suspect charged with murder in the killing of a Brunswick toddler made his first appearance in court Monday morning. A 17-year-old suspect also arrested in the killing is expected to make his first appearance Monday afternoon.
Dominique Lane appeared in court in the death of 13-month-old Antonio Santiago. Lane, 15, was initially reported to be 14 years old. A judge did not say if he is being charged as an adult. Investigators said he was an accomplice in the killing.
De'Marquise Elkins, 17, appeared in court Monday afternoon, and a preliminary hearing was set for next week. According to Georgia state law, 17-year-olds are considered adults in the criminal justice system.
Investigators said Elkins shot and killed the child as his mother pushed him in his stroller.
Both teens face first-degree murder charges.
"I feel sorry for the mother. I feel sorry for the baby. And my baby is innocent. He could've been dead too," said Brenda Moses, Lane's mother.
Outside court Monday, Moses and Lane's grandmother, Verdell Hunter, said Lane doesn't know Elkins. Hunter said her family doesn't know exactly what happened, but her grandson lives in the area and told her he was simply walking by when he saw Elkins.
"He's a victim," Hunter said. "He said that boy came up to him and said, 'I'm fixing to off you off. You a Mexican.' Because he had a hood on his head with the little thing in there. And my grandson said oh."
"My grandson is a victim," she added. "He could've been dead. The baby is a victim. The mother is a victim. My grandson is a victim. He's a victim."
Hunter said the killing is something her grandson would never be a part of, and his mother said he was merely a witness.

He is old enough at 15 and was charged as an adult.
Just got a twitter account yesterday because my facebook-free Lent has been driving me nuts, but I have been distinctly underwhelmed by twitter...thanks for pointing out how useful it can be
Wow — talk about a hot Latin temper. No wonder they lived apart. Baby Antonio was probably the only thing keeping them together. And he was arrested for that temper.
Sounds like a hate crime to me.
I would recommend following Michelle Malkin (who has been MIA for a day or two) Mark Levin is another good one. Michigan FReeper Jenk is good (@jen5309). I also follow Tim Walberg, Mike Shirkey, and Kerry Bentivolio.
She talks about her ligaments in her knees. She wonders if some girl who smokes crack in her building that she believes was responsible for the stabbing death of her 18 year old son in New Jersey and followed her to Georgia might also be involved in killing her baby. She thinks this girl might have influenced the baby shooters?! Huh?
There's more to this story. I'm betting there was some drug deal going down.
Thus we see the beginnings of the defense case. The suspect shot the toddler in self defense. It was him or the kid.
In broad daylight -- in the middle of the street -- where neighbors with cellphones had the police there within minutes???
That's a stretch --
Who would have been the buyer since she had no money???
Who would have been the buyer since she had no money???

Who said she had no money ???
she said thats what she told the murderers
she doesnt seem to have told the police that she had none...
I listened to the interview and I’m trying to understand.
Was her 18 year old son killed there in Brunswick or somewhere back in New Jersey???
And this woman who she got evicted — was she living next to her there in Brunswick or back in New Jersey???
I’m a little confused on the when and where.
So What???
The SLPC is a joke. It’s populated with nothing more than bigots from the lowest realm of hell.
Well, one thing for sure. She LOVES to talk. So if there is anything fishy on her part, she’ll give enough info eventually to put the pieces together.
I agree with you 100%.
The Dualing Aunts — Katrina and Obley:
Police in Brunswick have charged two teens with the intentional murder of the 13-month-old, apparently after a tip from an undaunted aunt of the younger of the pair.
The aunt, Debra Obley, later told a local TV reporter that she had inadvertently given her 15-year-old nephew, Dominique Lane, and 17-year-old DeMarquise Elkins a ride from the vicinity of the shooting a short time afterward.
When he got in the car, he laid down in the backseat, Obley said of the older teen. He kept looking around, peeping up, and I said, Boy, what you doing? You skipping school? You know, he said, No, maam.
Obley recalled that she pressed the matter and Elkins decided to walk. As he climbed out of the car she saw something in his waistband, she said.
A gun, she said.
Obley questioned her nephew.
I said If youve got something to do with this little baby, you cant talk to me. Im your auntie, Obley told the reporter. He said, Auntie, I dont even know the boy. I dont have anything to do with that.
Obley said she called the police even though that meant she was also reporting her nephew. She has since been threatened.
People saying they are going to kill me or have people to kill me, because Im a snitch, she said.
She still did not regret making the call.
That was a baby, she said. That baby cant come back. That mama will never get that baby back. Whoever did it deserves to be behind bars.
A woman who identified herself as the aunt of the older teen, Elkins, was insisting that he had been at her house having breakfast at the time of the shooting.
He was with us the whole time, said the aunt, Katrina Freeman.
Elkinss lawyer, public defender Kevin Gough, held a press conference. He was joined by the teens great-grandfather, 78-year-old McKinley Elkins.
The DeMarquise we know, the DeMarquise we love, would not do anything like this, the great-grandfather said. DeMarquise is not guilty. DeMarquise is innocent.
The lawyer declared, DeMarquise is absolutely, positively, 1,000 percent not guilty of these charges against him.
Elkinss Facebook page was taken down shortly after his arrest, but not before people had taken screen shots of his photos. One shows a tattoo on his forearm featuring a cross and the letters RIP. Others show him flashing Bloods gang signs. Bloods favor the number five, as in a posting under About DeMarquise.
ME IN MY N***AS A TURN UR BLO5K IN TO MURDER SCENE.
She claims that a crackhead woman living next door to her in Brunswick followed her from New Jersey, where she was responsible in some way for the stabbing death of her adult son. Now, she speculates that this crackhead woman is in some way aligned with the two teens who shot her infant.
So, mom believes its a possibility that twenty years and 1,000 miles apart, the same crackhead chick who got her son killed by a guy with a knife also got her infant killed by two kids with a gun.
When the shooting of the toddler first occurred, baby daddy was quoted as saying he blamed the mother, because she went back to a neighborhood where he repeatedly told her to stay away from.
I suspect that there may be multiple crackheads involved in this incident, and one of them may be mom.
Yes, i read that article.
Ok, is she trying to throw suspicion off the 17 year old?
Or in her anger and grief, is she just lashing out?
IIUC her son was killed in New Jersey 2008 and since she has been in Brunswick for 12 years she would not have been there with him in New Jersey at the time.
But what's strange is her son's girl friend in New Jersey then moving down to Brunswick to be near her dead boyfriend's mother. That is strange.
