Dear JRF,
You stated,”I also use 2 liter bottles of potable water in my cold frame to smooth out temp changes and keep my veggies from freezing if we get a really cold snap”

OK, I’m in the back of the class, raising my hand....please could you elaborate on that? Thanks!

BTW, several months ago you wrote the first two chapters of your cooking book (not “cook” but “cooking!”)for us. Have I missed out on further installments, or have you just been having your hands too full with catz and cold frames to be able to sit and type?

You haven't missed out on them. They are still in outline form. Getting me to actually sit down and write takes either a shock collar, or other strong motivation.

If folks keep bugging me about it, I'll eventually put out another chapter. I find it easy to ignore when no-one mentions it. ;)

On the 2 liter water bottles.... During the daytime, they absorb heat and actually get pretty warm. At night, when the inside of the cold frame cools down, they release that heat, and keeps things from freezing. It's like having a little 120W heater in my cold frame. Doesn't sound like much, but it doesn't take much to keep everything above 35-40F inside that closed space.

I’ve seen a picture of his “cold frame” and wondered why all those bottles of water were lined up in there. The sun warms up the bottles of water, then in the cold night, the bottles let off that heat and keep the cold frame plants from freezing. He may explain that better for you, but it made total sense. It was one of those “why didn’t I think about that” moments.

He has what he calls his “skill sets” and he can do most anything with very little. And, if he has nothing, he can scrounge and still find a way to do most anything.

His water bottles are basically the frugal man's Wall of Water. The sun heats the water during the day so keeps plants warm during the cold nights.
