“How do pants get on a roof?”
“One single time (ok, several times) and I get to hear about it for the rest of my life.”

It’s what makes you, you. Never a dull moment around you.

A thrower is a light with a long reach, it generally means a light with a more focused beam which can send it's light out to a longer distance and light up objects farther away.

A light that is floody is more like a wall of light, it is wider and lights up the immediate area well but doesn't reach very far.

Different lights have different mixtures of those functions, a light can be a good thrower with varying amounts of "spill", or width (flood).

Here is a light beam that shows what is out there on the market.

About light:

Everything I had to produce light produced a lot of light. One time, Kartographer put on an article by Selco and he spoke of the need for very little light. That really hit me for I had nothing that produced just a bit of light.

Selco said he had need of a tiny light so he could go outside at night without being spotted by the bad guys. Remember he was in a town of active fighting. If he needed to get something that was outside or needed to go father away from the house for something, he didn't want to be spotted and killed on the spot.

I went to Amazon right then and bought penlights, the kind medical people use to check eyes. I had one of those in my medical bag that was many years old and didn't function anymore. The ones I got have a pressure point and you can press that for the light to come and immediately release your finger and the light is off.

If I went into my back yard at night, I would only need to press that button one time quickly to know where I was. I know where objects are back there, I would just need to get oriented quickly to where I was. If I needed to press it again quickly, it would be fast. That tiny amount of light would be hard to be seen very far away.

So, in thinking about bright lights, don't forget practically no light is important, too.

"I am 80 years old with bad joints and bad lower back and I’m not lifting a 40 lb. weight of anything. I don’t take your comment as insulting, I just know what my physical limits are"

Pretty reasonable excuses. I had in mind a younger, "normal health" type female (like my wife) who has the same issues (unable to lift "reasonable" weights). She "could" do some weight work, and NEEDS to do some weight work, or she is going to have serious problems with bone density/broken bones when she becomes "of an age". Her excuse...lifting weights gives her muscle cramps (this all theoretical, of course, as she has never lifted much weight). My guess is that some good weight work followed by stretching would actually HELP her "cramping" problems.

An example of an excellent survival light is a Fenix LD12, it is a small single AA light suitable for the belt, or pocket, yet it is regulated and it has four brightness settings and readily accepts filters and diffusers designed for it, such as red filters, or diffusers to turn it into a lamp.

The LD12 has a low setting of 3 lumens and it will deliver that for 97 hours, it also has a high setting of 120 lumens for a couple of hours, with settings in between such as 27 lumens for 11 hours.

If you want something tinier, then the Fenix LD01 uses a single aaa, is perfect for the key chain and will deliver 3 lumens for 27 hours, 26 lumens for 3 hours, and 72 lumens for 1.5 hours, it is brighter than the old 2D Maglites.

“Pretty reasonable excuses. I had in mind a younger, “normal health” type female”...”

If you really want to help me, send me an unmarried brute of a man who can lift very heavy weight...

Regarding your “normal health”: At 80, I just had a blood test measuring what doctors like to measure and every single number I had was good to better than good. Normal cholesterol, normal triglycerides, better than normal good cholesterol, better than normal sugar, kidneys fine, blood pressure 120/72. I imagine my numbers are better than most adults no matter how young or old they are.

Thank you both for explaining what a “thrower” is. It is one of those highly technical terms! ;-D

Thanks for the reminder to look at the flip side of light, which is to be minimalist!

I don't much care what my numbers are, but they were pretty good, according to the last set taken. Considering the bits I've got missing. Like the kidney and spleen.

Daddy told me not to worry about disease or old age... he said I should worry if Texas brings back hanging.

..lifting weights gives her muscle cramps

The weather here sorta sucks. It's cooled off, and we've got a north wind blowing about 20 kts. But the sun was shining today after 1200.

So I climbed on the bike and rode. Wind and cold and all.

I did that because the weather has been bad for a while and NOT riding means my back will hurt and I'll have leg and foot cramps.

Not enjoyable, but better than waking up at 2:30 am with a massive leg cramp.

I made sure to ride by the beer store since I was out anyway. Gotta reward good behavior. ;)

“Thanks for the reminder to look at the flip side of light, which is to be minimalist!”

I got a package of six pen lights for $6.00 on Amazon and don't think I paid any shipping cost. Now I have almost nothing light which could be extremely important if zombies are walking around. Don't want them to see me. The “Walking Dead” comes on in about 25 minutes on AMC movie channel. Always good to have more ways to kill zombies.

Some people don't believe me when I say put broccoli around your house to keep away zombies because no one, even zombies, like that. (That is a joke, ok?)
